Thursday Movie Picks: TV Edition-Horror

Ooh..boogedy, boogedy, today is Halloween and I am going to see Carrie on the big screen this evening and, strangely enough, I’m looking forward to this. It is supposed to be a cold and rainy night so quite sucky for the kids but I hope it won’t be as bad as the weathermen are saying. We used to get tons of kids but now we get less than 40 so I expect even less this year. Now, on to TV and horror of which I watch little because I am just not into a lot of negativity which seems to be the in thing nowadays and I am one for some hope. Wandering through the Shelves comes up with a different theme each week so head on over to see what everyone else has chosen. Here are my 3...

1. THE ADDAMS FAMILY-1964-1966

Ahh... we are talking one strange family who delight in all things slightly evil from enjoying pain, having a dead garden and and letting a disembodied hand almost steal the show. Gomez, very wealthy and weird, loves his beautiful wife, Morticia. He gets lustful whenever she starts speaking French. Their 2 children, Wednesday and Pugsley are not the type of kids who like cuddling especially since Wednesday tries to kill her brother. Uncle Fester is loveably insane while Grandma likes to boil things. Lurch, their butler, rarely talks but looms over everything as he groans. You have Thing, the hand, Cousin It...a hairy being plus other strange nuts. It was a fun albeit creepy show that spawned a successful movie and sequels and now a new animated film.

2. THE MUNSTERS-1964-1966

A hardworking man, Herman, takes care of his beautiful wife, Lily, who, on occasion, sings some beautiful songs, and their young son who deals with school. Her father lives with them who brings Herman into some hair-brained schemes because the dad, although sweet isn’t the brightest knob. Their ugly cousin, Marilyn, lives with them and so does their pet in a moody mansion. Oh, yes, the dad is Frankenstein, his wife and her dad, vampires, their son is a werewolf and their ugly cousin is actually a beautiful blond who looks like the rest of us. Oh and their pet, who lives under the stairs is a prehistoric beast that breathes fire. This is my favourite which I loved more than the Addams Family even though The Addams Family gets more recognition. This family was loving and sweet and had no idea they were different plus who doesn’t love their kick ass car as well as the opening music from this show. They made a movie, in colour, which was just as hokey but I love it.

3. GRIMM-2011-2017

I guess this is my most horrific tv show pick but I really enjoyed it because, despite some ugly scenes, there was humour and a sense of family and hope. There is a detective who finds out he is a Grimm, someone who can see the real life “monsters”  who live among us. His German ancestors used to seek out these monsters a kill them using all sorts of tools but he decides to understand their side and not just whack off their head. He gets help from a wolf in human clothing who has sworn off his bloody ways and is a vegetarian and, together, along with Det. Burkhardt’s partner, investigate all sorts of strange murders. The detective has a loving fiancée, an understanding boss, who hides his own demons, plus other characters that help and hinder his life throughout the series. I love fairy tales and enjoyed how they brought in many old stories and tales like the 3 Bears, witches and even the chupacabra.

Now which 3 would you choose?

  1. I never saw the Grimm show but the Addams Family and the Munsters were a favorite as a kid. Perfect that Halloween falls on your movie day. Hope you have a happy and spooky Halloween. Smile-Erika

  2. Hi, Birgit!

These TV series are all up my dark alley. I watched every episode of all three. Both The Munsters and The Addams Family boasted star studded casts of veteran film actors. Grimm, in my opinion, was a great series with one of the weakest finales in TV history. Did you know that Lurch (Ted Cassidy) made a record? Side A of his single introduced a new dance craze called, not surprisingly, "The Lurch" that its producers hoped would sweep the nation. It failed to chart. Ted performed the song on Shindig!:

The more interesting B side is the spoken word tearjerker "Wesley." Here's Ted reciting that song on Hollywood A Go-Go:

I hope you enjoy Carrie. Be careful out there on the roads filled with trick-or-treat kids. Happy Halloween, dear friend BB!

    1. I forgot to mention that Ted Cassidy was only 46 when he died. Beverley Owen, the original "Marilyn," the ugly duckling of The Munsters clan, died earlier this year at age 81.

    2. Correction: The first Ted Cassidy video was incorrectly labeled by the uploader. The music TV program is Shivaree, not Shindig.

    3. I have to listen to the Lurch song and I knew Ted Cassidy died young probably because he grew so much. I hope to listen to it in the next couple of days

  3. Ironic that The Addams Family and The Munsters ran the same years, isn't it?
I'm going with Stranger Things and Tales From the Crypt.

    1. It is strange as I thought the Munsters were earlier. To me, they are better than The Addams Family.

  4. I watched the first two but I never got into Grimm. I Like the Addams Family. Munsters I could take or leave, I didn't see that one nearly as much.

  5. Even when I was a kid the scary really wasn't for me so though I adore both Carolyn Jones and Yvonne de Carlo I was only the most occasional watcher of either of those shows. I was busy with Bewitched and the like.

I've heard of Grimm but it held no real interest for me.

Since I'm not a horror guy I came a cropper this week and am sitting it out. Glad this series of themes is done, they were nearly impossible for me.

  6. I saw Carrie years ago in a movie theater by myself because none of my friends would go with me, LOL. It was scary! But a good movie for tonight! My hubby and me bet on everything. He says we'll get 50-70 kids trick or treating tonight; I say 60-80. Whoever is the closest without going over will win (Price is Right rules).

Never heard of Grimm, but enjoyed the Munsters and the Addams Family growing up. Herman was always sincere but so misunderstood by many.

  9. I liked both comedies, but preferred The Addams Family, overall. Morticia and Gomez had an air of sophistication about them. ☺ That said, Grandpa Munster was definitely cool! Yvonne DeCarlo and Carolyn Jones both gave their characters special flare. Never heard of Grimm, but it does sound interesting. Does The Twilight Zone qualify as horror, or, The Outer Limits? Those are two favourites that come to mind.

    1. I preferred the Munsters and even dressed up like Lily on Halloween once. Yes, both work well but had already chosen The Twilight Zone and I never saw The Outer Limits

  10. Grimm got better. The first couple seasons were monster of the week, and boring, but I didn't give up on it, and that paid off in later seasons.

I like Addams Family better even though Munsters was always on TV, so I saw way more Munsters as a kid.

    1. I preferThe Munsters and just loved all of them especially Lily. Grimm is one I loved but I know what you mean about the different monsters each week but I also loved it because of the fairy tale vibe and without all the double dealing etc...

  11. Hi sis, I will always have a soft spot for The Munsters. It was never anything more than goofy eye candy but there was always something about it that kept me captivated. The Adams Family never did resonate with me.

As for my three picks, I have to go with Stranger Things as one of them. It's campy, fun, scary, and somewhat sinister. The second show that comes to mind is Kolchak, The Night Stalker. They had some interesting plot lines at a time when very little horror was on TV. And my third choice? Ultraman... that Japanese show we used to watch as kids. Each show introduced a new monster ready to stomp on Tokyo. And sometimes they would recycle old favourites like Godzilla. Honourable mention to The Walking Dead. I watched the first season but there wasn't enough to hold me over to season two.

    1. Yeah! I am glad you are here and we think alike when it comes to the Munsters. Kolchak is a great show and I had chosen this last year, I think. Why did I not think of Ultraman!? I remember it well and I think, I even got scared by it...typical. I remember we pretended to be Ultraman and Godzilla fighting on mom and dad’s bed...you won.

  18. I'm running SO far behind after being away for three days. Trying to catch up is harder than I anticipated. You won't believe this but I've seen ONE of these. It's Grimm of course, and I never missed a single show. I loved the wolf and his fiance, then wife. They were the humor, at least he was. It was a great show and I was sad when it was gone. The others I've never seen.

  20. This new job is interfering with my blog-life. I guess I'll have to quit!

Well, for me, 'NIGHT GALLERY' without a doubt!

And I think 'THE TWILIGHT ZONE' and 'THE OUTER LIMITS' should also count, so those two make three for me.

I watched 'The Addams Family' and 'The Munsters' a lot when I was a real little kid, but I'm sure most of the humor went right over my head. I'd probably dig them a great deal more if I were to see them now, at the age of 60.

    1. I still need to see Night Gallery especially with “blind” Joan Crawford. I only saw a couple of episodes of the Outer Limits and that was a long time ago. The Munsters is a typical 60’s family sitcom except they are monsters

  21. My daughter binged the Munsters recently. She tried Addams Family but wasn't as impressed. I expected it to be the other way around, to be honest.

  22. Like the previous few years we kept the house dark for Halloween since we didn't want to mess with getting up to answer the door. Yeah, we're old party poopers these days.

Instead we stayed in and watched an old Boris Karloff film called The Walking Dead which was pretty good with a somewhat positive message at the end--or at least a thoughtful message.

When I was younger I was more of a Munsters fan than one of The Addams Family though I did get the autographs of Ted Cassidy and Jackie Coogan when we worked with them at a circus in Rochester, NY. They didn't seem particularly thrilled to be there.

    1. You are a party pooper:). I would like to see that Karloff movie. How interesting that they were at the circus and I can understand why they would not be happy about it since they were there based on their monster looks especially Jackie Coogan who was a huge child star in the 1920s and starred with Chaplin in The Kid. His,parents went through all his money and he took them to court which resulted in The Coogan Law.

  23. I love the Addams Family as a kid. I've only seen like an episode or two of Grimm. The effects looked bad, so I just couldn't see it anymore.
