Happy Anniversary!

I love my Harley and I believe my former in- laws would have too. They loved dogs and knew how to train dogs! Dad( not my Daddy) had trained the dogs that, when they went camping, he would just tell Trixie to pack and she would bring her leash, bed, and dog bowl to the camper. I bet they could have trained Harley to behave around food. He grabbed the chicken bone, again, off my plate and, this morning, he got another bone off the ground plus a sandwich in the plastic wrap! We have to get a better doggie muzzle. Anyway, March is rough for my ex because his brother died on March 1st, 6 yrs ago; dad died on March 14th; mom's( my other mom) birthday is the 18th and their wedding anniversary was on the 25th. Mom passed away April 14th, I believe. Dad followed that next March over 10 yrs now. I like to send a tribute to these 2 dog loving, camping loving, wonderful people who got married back in 1950.  Here are the top songs from that time...

1. MONA LISA SUNG BY NAT KING COLE

This song was written by Ray Evans and Jay Livingston for the film, " Captain Carey U. S. A." In 1949 but became famous by Nat King Cole's smooth vocals.

2. GOODNIGHT IRENE SUNG BY GORDON JENKINS AND THE WEAVERS

My daddy hated this song because his brother's wife's name was Irene and he wasn't overly fond of Auntie Irene..maybe because she was not not the faithful sort. I liked this song and had no clue this was done by the famous Leadbelly back in 1933. Apparently, he was inspired by a song  named, " Irene, Goodnight," by Gussie Lord Davis back in 1883.

3. TENNESSEE WALTZ SUNG BY PATTI PAGE

This song, written by Pee Wee King with lyrics by Redd Stewart back in 1946, was released in 1948 but became most famous by Ms. Page. I can see mom and dad dance to this. I bet they are dancing to this now.

Miss You and Love You.

  1. Hi, Birgit!... and Hooray for Harleywood! I always love seeing pics of your pooch, a lovable, goofy fella who will eat anything that's not nailed down . As I told you at Shady's Place, I think Harley might be a billygoat mix. :)

Thanks for sharing bittersweet memories of departed loved ones, your hubby's parents, and dedicating this music post to them as you mark their anniversary. My mother's birthday is March 25, and John Ettline's is March 12. It's amazing that your hubby's folks' dog Trixie did her part to help with the packing on camping trips. Regardless of their breed, some dogs are just easier to train than others. We sent our Toto to a dog training academy and she flunked out.

I have always loved Nat's recording of "Mona Lisa (men have named you" and especially clips of him performing the song. He had such magnetism, made such a profound connection with the audience, didn't he? My folks owned a copy of "Goodnight Irene," and I occasionally heard my dad crooning the old song around the house, even when the record wasn't playing. It was one of his favorites. They also had the 45 of Patti Page's "Tennessee Waltz." Like you, I have a fond memory of watching them dance to the record downstairs in the game room where they often entertained friends with parties.

Thank you very much for sharing music and reminiscences. I wish you a happy Wednesday, dear friend BB. I'll be back waiting for you tamale, sitting in the balcony-- "At the Movies!"

    1. Harley is a big suck but I love it. We had to buy the Hanibal muzzle so he can't ruin that one.
I agree with you about Nat King Cole and his voice is velvet.
I always liked Goodnight, Irene and the waltz by Patti Page. . My in-laws were just the beesknees

  2. Hi Birgit, your former in-laws sound like wonderful people. It's so stressful to have a garbage hound! (Training Tips) I hope Harley doesn't have any ill effects from the bones. These classic tunes are all familiar. Interesting to learn more about them!

    1. Harley seems to be aok but we got a Hannibal Lector muzzle. He can breathe through it but can't pick anything up. Thank you for the link and I will try to instill this toy hubby...we shall see.

  3. What a lovely tribute. Good on you, Birgit. I especially like Goodnight Irene, though I've never heard it performed by that group.

  4. That's a great tribute. And good songs too. When we had a Harley dog he's get into any food he could, like eating half my birthday cake that was on the table one year. He outgrew it though. Sometimes it just takes patience, doesn't it?

    1. Oh No! Your birthday cake? Lol...sorry but that is funny but not good for the dog. I think he was given people food and he had to fight for it with other dogs when it was thrown on the ground.

  6. Harley has a food problem. Just like Squiggles. They will eat any and everything in sight. Poor you. Hard to train a dog when you work every day.

Your former in-laws sound like wonderful people. I think I've heard of all those songs, but they are definitely before my time. Bless you for honoring them this week, dear.
