Dean Martin is one of the most well known entertainers in the world for his singing, his movie making and his television work but most don’t know his humble beginnings. He grew up in Ohio to Italian parents and only taught him to speak Italian because, they only spoke Italian. This lead to many issues when Dino started school since he could not speak English which resulted in constant bullying. He learned how to fight back because he became a boxer winning a few matches in his level plus he and his roommate started a fight club in their apartment as a way to pay the rent. He had quite a few jobs including rubbing too close to crime when he helped in bootlegging even dating Meyer Lansky’s daughter for a time( thank God he lived through that!). He worked at a gas station, a dealer at a casino and as a steel worker. He found his way onto the stage and met up with Jerry Lewis where they started to talk about teaming up. When they did…they bombed! They decided to just free talk through their schtick which included Dino singing and the stars made it big. They became so popular, that they ended up making many films plus starred on TV shows like Ed Sullivan. It seemed the star was more Jerry Lewis who was the clown up against Martin who was the straight man which went straight to Jerry Lewis’s head. Martin was becoming more disgruntled especially when he saw Lewis and actress, Sheree North on a magazine cover and Martin was cropped out! The last film they made, “Hollywood or Bust”, was not pleasant since neither spoke to the other once a scene was done. They ended up not speaking for years until Frank Sinatra surprised Jerry Lewis, on his annual telethon ( for Muscular Dystrophy), bringing Dean Martin on and they seemed to bury the hatchet…kinda. Dino was also part of the very famous Rat Pack group ( originally created by Humphrey Bogart and whom Lauren Bacall, Bogart’s wife, coined them the “Rat Pack” the morning after booze laden night) that consisted of Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop. Actually, Shirley MacClaine and Judy Garland were part of this troupe as well, but the men were the most famous. They were major liners at Las Vegas singing, drinking, making jokes, drinking and having tons of fun. Later on, it seems Dino never really drank and had apple juice in his glass but I’m not completely convinced. Maybe he did this often, but not all the time and I recall him being quite inebriated when on The Johnny Carson Show. It is quite a funny time to see him on the show.
Speaking of TV, he had his own Dean Martin Show that I have only seen snippets of and often, you see Martin lose it when a comedian was just way too funny. He, also, started the “ Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts” where, unlike the ones we see today which, are about “stars” no one cares about plus are way too rude and off-putting, he roasted some very famous people like Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, Elizabeth Taylor, and Michael Landon. He had his staple of comedians that came on like Phyllis Diller, Don Rickles, Nypsy Russell, Jonathan Winters but also famous stars from the people mentioned above to Bob Hope, Flip Wilson and President Ronald Reagan. Did I mention Foster Brooks? I LOVE Fister Brooks who truly knew how to play a drunkard.
Dean was also quite a good actor who could hold his own against stars like Wayne and Stewart plus could make fun of the James Bond franchise and his own cool image, but when Sharon Tate was murdered ( she was to be his co-star in the next Matt Helm movie), devastated over her death, he stopped making that movie and never went back. The same thing happened a few years earlier when he was to star opposite Marilyn Monroe in the film, “Something’s Got to Give”. When she was fired from the film, he went to bat for her and, it seems the Execs decided to hire her back but, when she died, Dean would not make the film without her and it was shelved ( later to be made with James Garner and Doris Day in “Move Over, Darling”).
By the 1970s, his chain-smoking habit was doing a number on his lungs and his voice but he continued to croon until his beloved son, Dean Jr., died in an air accident when the F14 Phantom jet crashed into the Pacific Ocean in 1987. Dean never recovered despite help from family and friends like Sinatra. Dean became somewhat of a recluse going out to his regular restaurant haunt to eat dinner looking nothing like the charismatic, handsome man he used to be. When he developed lung cancer, he was told her could get surgery which would prolong his life but he refused and died on Christmas Day with his family believing he wanted to see his son again. It’s a sad end to a most gregarious and loyal ( to friends) man who deserves all the accolades he got and, I think, was better than Jerry Lewis.

Fascinating. So much info that I didn't know about this very talented meme.
ReplyDeleteDid you see your wishes on the weekend blog? Hope YOUR weekend was special. Sandra sandracox.blogspot.com
This is Birgit yes, Dean led quite a life and a sad ending. I could not find my birthday wishes but I thank you so much for thinking of me.
DeleteMan not meme. Durr
ReplyDeleteLOL
DeleteHi Birgit…I will watch any film with Dean in it one of my favourites….reminds me of me and my Dad on the sofa on a Sunday afternoon with a bag of crisps…xxxx
ReplyDeleteThis is Birgit..it so nice to have these warm memories. I have them too, with my dad.
DeleteHUGE Dean Martin fan, here! 👋 I've seen all of his movies post Jerry (not a fan of those collaborations) and watched his TV show regularly. He also hosted a bunch of celebrity roasts that were fun. Such a sad ending for a wonderful singer! 😢
ReplyDeleteHe was great and loved his Roasts with Foster Brooks. I’d love to watch his variety show. I’m hoping to find it somewhere.
DeleteI think I was first introduced to him via his collaborations with Jerry Lewis. Those movies played on the weekends on a movie show locally. I didn't realize what a sad end he had.
ReplyDeleteYeah, poor man could not find a way to deal with his son’s death. It is sad. I hope you see more of his other films which are good.
DeleteHi Birgit!
ReplyDeleteDino! Always so laid back but I’m guessing quite complex under the cool demeanor. I too preferred him once he had broken free from Jerry, though their films can be amusing (in small doses).
I used to watch his variety show with my Grandmom who loved him. My memories are vague but what I do recall is it being VERY 60’s in look and attitude with Dean always just a bit fuzzy but bemused and he always had great guests.
Watching the Jerry Lewis Telethon was a ritual for my family as well. Such a distinctive beast, the likes of which we probably won’t see again, so much entertainment and a star gazers delight and all for a great cause. Jerry was surely a handful and probably terribly wearing to live with (or even be around for too long) but he was devoted to those people, especially kids, with muscular dystrophy and in finding a cure. Anyway, my point is I was watching when the Dean & Jerry reunion happened (it had been rumored for several years but it took Sinatra to step in and make it a reality) and it was quite a thing. I think the wounds to their relationship were too deep to ever be completely repaired but there was obvious affection between them at that moment.
Dean really scrambled when they split (his first film as a solo “Ten Thousand Bedrooms” wasn’t a disaster but overall it’s rather a flat middling comedy) but then he got lucky with a decent role in “The Young Lions” followed by a role that suited him down to the ground in “Some Came Running” and showed his ability and along with his singing skills put him back on his feet.
I’m not sure that Sharon Tate was penciled in for the next Matt Helm film (LOVE the series even if they are ridiculous in the extreme) , but she was his costar in “The Wrecking Crew” (and quite a delight in it!) but her murder did convince Dean to put the kibosh on any further pictures in the series.
I’m finally here and yet so tired…story of my life.
DeleteFrom what I have read in my books, she was to be in the next Matt Helm but then, she was murdered in one of the worst ways and Dean was greatly affected by this so he shut down the series and never started it back up.
Love he did with Matt Helm, it’s such a great parody.
He wasn’t an actor of limitless scope. He understood that and while he took on a few dramas where he did well, he wisely chose pictures in his comfort zone.
ReplyDeleteHere’s my top ten of his films:
Some Came Running (1958)-His best performance, he should have been nominated.
Airport (1970)-The movie is often derided but it’s so much better than the faceless disaster junk churned out now. You care about these characters. I believe Dean took a lower fee and a percentage which made him a mint.
What a Way to Go! (1964)-It’s Shirley MacLaine’s picture but Dino is fun as the worm she can’t stand initially.
Bells Are Ringing (1960)-Sadly, Judy Holliday’s final film and she’s as dynamic as ever. She owns the picture, but she and Dean make a very simpatico pair.
Toys in the Attic (1963)-Though written by Lillian Hellman this has a very Tennessee Williams feel to it. Dean holds his own against the juggernaut of Geraldine Page and Wendy Hiller (plus Gene Tierney in a small role).
Ada (1961)-Dean is the puppet governor of an unnamed Southern state (think Georgia) who marries a shady lady (Susan Hayward). When he tries to stand up to the machine and is injured Susie swoops in, takes charge and kicks butts. His isn’t the spotlight role but I love this under-known gem.
Texas Across the River (1966)-At first Dean seems an odd choice for a Western but his ambling persona fits the genre quite well.
How to Save a Marriage and Ruin Your Life (1968)-Made at the tail end of when this sort of romantic comedy ruled the box office with a delightful Stella Stevens stealing the picture.
Career (1959)-Lowkey drama with a stacked cast (Shirley MacLaine, Carolyn Jones, Anthony Franciosa) with Dean atypically cast as a two-faced bastard.
Rio Bravo (1959)-Another packed cast with Dino and The Duke working well together.
I love your list! As per norm, there are some here that I have not seen. I agree with you about Airport but I always have a little snicker when Dean approaches Van Heflin and mentions the bomb which is something one expects on a comedy. It’s the last thing he should have said…lol. I am quite sick of all the AI that has become such a go to that you can see the fake news. Funny how Rio bravo is on the lower end of your list and it’s on my higher end. Funny how neither of us chose Kiss Me, Stupid or Who’s Been Sleeping in My Bed.
DeleteBIRGIT ~
ReplyDeleteI like Dino a lot. More as an actor than a singer. It looks like I really need to see 'Some Came Running'. But I really love 'BELLS ARE RINGING' and 'WHAT A WAY TO GO'. (And what a cast, too! Shirley MacLaine, Dean Martin, Paul Newman, Robert Mitchum, Dick Van Dyke, Bob Cummings, and Gene Kelly... who I think steals the show! Just like "Rin Tin Tin" stole the show in 'Bells Are Ringing'.)
Of his movies with Jerry Lewis, the ones I like best are 'SAILOR BEWARE', 'PARDNERS', 'ARTISTS AND MODELS', and (#1 by far...) 'HOLLYWOOD OR BUST'. I know I've mentioned this before, but H.O.B. is my favorite "guilty pleasure" movie and my immediate go-to when "this world" starts to depress me (again). Needless to say, I've seen it A LOT!
Trigger may have been "the smartest horse in the movies", but in H.O.B. it is proven that Mr. Bascom was "the fastest dog in the movies". Just thinking and writing about it, I realize it's time for me to see it again. Helck! I haven't seen it for six months. That's hard for me to believe!

Oh I have seen H or B about 3 times and I enjoy it especially the dog. I was quite surprised that the 2 stars refused to speak to each other off set which is a shame. I love Scared Stiff and My Friend Irma. I can only take Lewis in small doses though. I hope you watched it again and had a good laugh.
