Canada and The U. S.

We all know the crap going on right now with that orange F#)’ who get his makeup from a cheesos bag, filibusters and places more and more tariffs because it’s his way of trying to force people to capitulate. This is not surprising because, if you read or watch documentaries or news reports about him from the 90s you will find out how, when an elderly woman refused to sell her childhood home, in Atlanta, to Trump, he tried to force her out but stopping her heat, hydro and water forcing her to find a lawyer. Thankfully, the lawyers worked for her pro bono since they were disgusted by Trump’s nasty antics. She won and Trump built his Casino, now bankrupt and gone, around her. She smiled and was happy she kept her home. When Trump wanted to build  a golf course and uber expensive resort for him and his cronies in Scotland, he wanted to buy up this small town, but was met with resistance headed by a lady upset that he wanted to destroy their unique hamlet. He pulled the same antics, stopping their water, heat and hydro, buying off people trying to force the townsfolk out. This one woman held her ground and she won! What did the asshole do? He made sure all all the dirt that was taken off his gold course was placed  in front of her view of the ocean so all she could see was the huge hill. Guess what? The golf course went bankrupt and another bites the dust. Canada will never…ever be part of the States and we won the war of 1812. The States thinking of Manifest Destiny did not work in 1812 and won’t work today.

I decided to look at some Patriotic films including one that is very much The U. S.  rah rah type that I had to include because it is a good film. Here we go…

1. YANKEE DOODLE DANDY-1942

This is a very patriotic, U. S. Movie musical tht stars James Cagney as George M. Cohan, the songwriter, dancer, singer, writer, producer from Broadway who wrote Yankee Doodle, You’re a Grand Old Flag and Over There. It’s a great musical that showcases how musically gifted James Cagney was and showcases his versatility. It’s not an accurate account, obviously, but you can’t help but feel invigorated and was a great showcase to bring out ones’ patriotism during these dark days of World War 2. By the way, today is James Cagney’s birthday.

2. CANADIAN BACON-1995

Michael Moore, of the great documentary films he creates, wrote and directed this film which is a great satire about the U.S. wanting to invade Canada. Yes, how apropos! It’s an excellent satire that is also quite dumb but that’s what makes it hilarious and it stars the great John Candy is his 2nd last film before his untimely death. It also stars Alan Alda as the inept U. S. President with a variety of famous people who are either involved in the U. S. Hijinks or the Canadians. I love this movie and laugh every time I watch it.

3. COME FROM AWAY-2021

This is from a musical stage play that became a huge hit and has been playing  for over 20 yrs before finally ending, I believe, this year. This film takes the play and places it on screen depicting the disastrous moment in time when the twin towers were destroyed by planes hijacked by terrorists. The planes were not allowed into the States so some planes were diverted to Gander, Newfoundland, a very small town, who opened their doors and hearts to the 7,000 stranded U.S. residents building friendships that have lasted to this day. It is a musical but so much more and lets us know how we are truly friends no matter what.

So, just an FYI, the amount of fentanyl coming from the States into Canada in triple the amount than the other way around. The amount of guns and other illegal arms, come from the U. S. Into our country. Sadly, Trump says patriotic words for his own agenda and lies about what really goes on. Not surprising so, let’s remember to laugh and to know that we are friends despite the political crap.

  1. Hi, Birgit!

Happy to see you this morning, dear friend! I'm here fressing my popcorn with you in the balcony-- "At The Movies!"

Frankly, it is very hard nowadays for me to watch flag-waving patriotic films of the past or any movie or TV show that has the POTUS as a character, with actors like Alan Alda, Michael Douglas, Martin Sheen and Kiefer Sutherland in the role. They all seem so utterly dated now, so irrelevant, and forever lost. Everything we thought we knew and loved about our way of life, everything we had come to expect from a U.S. president, from congress, and from the Supreme Court, everything we trusted about the inherent wisdom of the American people, their willingness to do the right thing when everything was on the line, it has all been turned upside down and blown to smithereens, and we find ourselves living inside a nightmare that only continues to worsen. I used to laugh, Birgit. I used to work hard to keep friendships intact in spite of differences. But not anymore. Far too much damage has been done, and it was preventable. Last November, voters had a chance to turn the page on this insanity. Instead they opened a brand new and even more terrible chapter, and now we are saddled with ridiculously unqualified and shamefully partisan Fox News personalities as the heads of government and an agenda of greed, corruption, lawlessness and cruelty that will go on and on unless and until we can stop this runaway freight train at the ballot box. Honestly, I don't know if, when or how we will ever get America back. I offer my apologies to you and your fellow Canadians for all that you are being forced to endure. Heaven knows, the man who is inflicting all this pain and uncertainty on you will never say he is sorry because he is never wrong.

  2. I am not proud to be an American. After reading American History and watching documentaries about how this country was stolen from Native peoples, I am disgusted! Thankfully, my ancestors didn't arrive until the late 1890's. And under that morons attempts to deny birthright citizenship, neither of my parents would be considered citizens.

My mother's oldest sister and many of my Italian cousins all lived and still live in Canada. Constant rivalry about Canada vs America but it was usually over sports. My cousin Nelson de Benedet played for the Detroit Red Wings and Reno Bertoia played for the Tigers. I wish it was just sports that we argued about.

I never realized how many stupid people lived in America until the 2016 election. I have first cousins who have moved to Europe. It is a thought.

  4. I never wanted to live under an authoritarian regime. And yet, here we are. Sadly, those that were supposed to defend us against this have capitulated and are obeying in advance. I don't know if we'll ever get back what we once had. Those in power are destroying everything that once made us great. But, you know I rant on Tuesdays on my own blog, so I'll end this rant now.
