This is freebie week for Monday Music Moves Me and it’s my “Which song won the Oscar” time and we shall see if you guess things correctly for this year, 1965 when I was only 1 yr old. It’s an interesting array of musical tastes this year but “The Sound of Music” is not in this because the songs were all part of the Broadway show so could not be eligible for an Oscar. Let’s see if you can figure out which song won the Oscar, which was nominated and which came up empty-handed.
1. BABY, THE RAIN MUST FALL SUNG BY GLENN YARBROUGH
2. THE SHADOW OF YOUR SMILE SUNG BY ASTRUD GILBERTO
This song, written by Johnny Mandel with lyrics by Paul Francis Webster, comes from the film, “The Sandpiper” and it seems to fit the film and it works with Astrud’s voice. Sadly she died in 2023.
3. WHAT’S NEW PUSSYCAT SUNG BY TOM JONES
Tom Jones is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to singing due to his strong voice and vocal range. This song is fun and I think Burt Bacharach, the music, and Hal David, lyrics, captures the fun of the film and Tom Jones can make any song sound sexy.
So, which song won, which was nominated and which song got zip?
Hi Birgit - I'm not guessing - but as you say Tom Jones is a force to be reckoned with ... and that song is 'amazing' ... appropriate for those times - cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteI liked Baby, The Rain Must Fall. And Tom Jones, definitely in a league of his own.

I'm assuming the third song, the only one I've heard, is the one that got zip. The others? Well, I don't know if I'd be able to pick them out of a lineup, so of course one of those was nominated and the other one won.
ReplyDeleteIf I remember correctly, The Shadow of Your Smile won. Although the film was trashed, I actually liked it. ☺ What's New, Pussycat was nominated. Despite not winning, it propelled Tom Jones to superstardom.
ReplyDeleteI hope your weather is cooler than ours. Summer will be over all too soon and then it'll be cold again, so I shall try to not complain too badly. :) Before reading through the comments. I thought the song The Shadow of Your Smile could be the winner. While I didn't recognize the title, I knew once I began listening and of course, I knew Tom Jones song without even playing it. I would put What's New Pussycat getting nominated. The first song and artist I didn't know. I really didn't like the vocals or the tune. This one I say got nothing at all. I'm probably wrong about everything. :) Thanks for joining the 4M party, Birgit. Have a boogietastic week, my dear!
ReplyDeleteWhat's New, Pussycat is my nomination for the Oscar winner and Baby the Rain Must Fall as dominated. I had the 45 (dating myself) of Baby the Rain Must Fall - I loved that song when it came out. Now, I have to admit, in rehearing it I wasn't that impressed with the vocal. So I'm sure that once again I guessed wrong.
ReplyDeleteNominated, not dominated. I blame my typo on taking a walk in the heat this afternoon.
