My Brother’s Picks

My brother knows his music. I know show tunes, classical, ABBA, fun stuff from the 80s but my brother knows music especially the Blues, Classic Rock, Prog, Jazz etc… and he can tell you a thing or 2 about the origins of the music and that good old Rock music, etc… is still strong despite what we hear on the regular radio and TV. I asked my brother to let me know 3 songs he is liking right now and he chose the 3 below. I am joining in on  Monday Music Moves Me, even though it is Wednesday. I’ll ask my brother to comment and give more info on  his choices…

1. ANYHOW BY THE TEDESCHI TRUCKS BAND-2016

My brother told me he saw Susan Tedeschi, a few years back, at Artpark and just fell in love with her voice and playing. I know I heard of her through one of you lovely people…it could have been John Holton, a great blogger who loves music in all forms. She sings it with so much depth that she reminds me of the classic gals from yesterday like Janis Joplin. She met Derek Trucks and they formed this band and travel all over showcasing their great musical abilities.

2. FLY AT NIGHT SUNG BY BILL HENDERSON-2019

Bill Henderson is from the band Chilliwack who wrote this song back in the late ‘70s which became a big hit. Bill Henderson was on the Taylor James Show singing his classic.

3. BIRTHDAY CAKE BY MY SON, THE HURRICANE-2018

This is different and is from the Niagara Region. I love the full band sound but I might have to get used to the lead man’s voice because it’s Rap, not my favourite but my brother is more progressive than I am in this style of music. I do love the music and they are original which is excellent.

For people out there, what are you listening to at the moment?  If you have brothers or sisters, what are they listening to?

  1. Hi, Birgit!

I'm back just in time to say hello to your brother and to dig his band and song recommendations.

For me, this is a genuine treat, because your brother's musical taste is closely aligned with mine. "Anyhow," an original song by the Jacksonville, Florida based Tedeschi Trucks band from their 2015 album Let Me Get By, is power packed, a very exciting performance featuring soulful lead vocal by Susan, outstanding electric blues-rock musicianship and an ear-pleasing Chicago style horn section. I read that the band has worked with Leon Russell and covered an entire Joe Cocker album. The TT band is the real deal!

I remember Bill Henderson's Canadian prog rock/hard band/pop rock band Chilliwack. Once again, this is dope for me, rock nirvana. Listening to Bill's smooth but authoritative vocal and beholding his guitar virtuosity as he performed "Fly At Night" made my eyes roll back in my head with pure pleasure. This is what it's all about, right here.

i also thoroughly enjoyed My Son the Hurricane, a 12 to 14-piece brass, funk, hip hop, rock, jazz and metal collective based in BB's neck of the woods, Niagara, Ontario. They're tight as a drum, and I hear everything from Bruno Mars to Average White Band in their music. Great stuff!

My favorite bands at the moment are two world class cover bands, Broken Peach based in Vigo, Spain, and Sing It Live based in Adelaide, South Australia. I urge your brother to watch on YouTube the Halloween release of Broken Peach's cover of "Enter Sandman."

Thank you for allowing your brother to pick the songs for today's post, dear friend BB. I'm returning to blogging this Friday the 13th with a new post at Shady's Place and hope you can come over for a look and a listen. In the meantime, I will be here again tamale, sitting the balcony and waiting for you-- "At the Movies!"

  2. This is quite an honour, sis, thank you! To be honest, I could probably do this 100 more times since I'm always exploring the world of music. I love the classic stuff from my generation but I'm always pushing myself to look beyond that. The journey has been both fascinating and inspiring.

I first learned of Susan Tedeschi back in the early 90s and saw her live with her own band way back then. I've always loved her voice, the power, the soul, the emotion. Her solo material holds up very well and I urge people to check it out. Somewhere along the way, her band began to collaborate with Derek Trucks' band and that's when the serious magic began to happen. Their band encapsulates everything I love about music... the horn section, the chorus section, two drummers, and I'm not sure there is a better slide guitar player out there these days than Derek Trucks. I've seen them live once and I need to see them again.

I've always been a casual Chilliwack fan but this particular live version of Fly at Night is just outstanding. I think Taylor James adds a lot to this particular rendition. Those two seem to work very well together.

As for My Son the Hurricane, I've seen them live around Niagara four or five times now and their shows just buzz with energy and excitement. They were headed by Jacob Bergsma for many years and he seemed to be a polarizing figure. His rap stylings were either considered infectious or way too over the top. I guess it's an acquired taste. I don't think Jacob is with the band anymore but they continue to tour Canada, the U.S., and abroad with more of an emphasis on funk and ska... still lots of fun to watch. And I adore this particular bowling-themed video. It shows the band has a sense of humour as well.

  3. Hey, Birgit's brother! Great choices!

You didn't hear about Susan Tedeschi from me: today was the first time I had actually heard of her. Very good singer....
