Storms

Yesterday, was quite stormy…rain, some hail, lightening, thunder all day long. March went out like a lion, that’s for sure so it works with this week’s theme over at Monday Music Moves Me. I always think of the brilliant songs, “Stormy Weather” sung by Judy Garland and “Riders of the Storm” by the Doors but I went with these songs and hope you enjoy…

1. STORMS SUNG BY FLEETWOOD MAC-1979

This song was written by Stevie Nicks for their album, “Tusk” and was about her affair with Mick Fleetwood which did not help his marriage…obviously.

2. THE STORM SUNG BY CHRIS DEBURGH-2010

I love Chris DeBurgh, an Irish singer, balladeer, and singing recanteur who has sung about many storms and rain, but I really like this song with the infusion of Irish music.

3. RAIN IS FALLING SUNG BY ELO-1981

Along with ABBA, I love ELO which was another band I really wanted to see but knew my mom would say no since she said no to seeing ABBA when they were on their Voulez-Vous tour( “there might be drugs there”, my mom said). They had an elaborate set back in the 1970s with a space ship and a light show but I loved how they brought in all these classical elements into their music. This song was written by Jeff Lynne which is about loss and sadness, a typical theme when singing bout rain and storms.

Which stormy songs come into your mind?

  1. Hi, Birgit!

I never get tired of listening to Stevie's bewitching vocals. Her voice and her words always ring with honesty and sincerity. Thank you for reminding me about the unusual song "Tusk," a radical stylistic departure for Fleetwood Mac driven by the pounding sound of the USC Marching Band. I just now watched the official video for the track.

That certainly is a fine live performance and stormy story song by Chris de Burgh. I'm sure you remember his mellow love song hit "The Lady in Red" which topped the chart in Canada in 1986. The official music video for that song was played heavily on the MTV station where I worked at the time.

Jeff Lynne's "Rain Is Falling" is indeed a beautiful song. It's funny how your mother forbade you to attend ELO and ABBA concerts, seeing as how listening to their music is a well documented gateway to sex, drugs and devil worship. :)

Among the stormy songs that come to my mind are a version of "Stormy Weather" recorded by my hometown heroes The Magnificent Men. Their cover was so popular that it became one of their signature songs and was used in the soundtrack of the 2003 Melanie Griffith - Sylvester Stallone movie Shade. Other great rain or storm songs include "Raindrops" by Dee Clark which features sound effects of thunder and heavy rain at the beginning and end of the song, "Tell It To The Rain" by the Four Seasons and the novelty folk song "Don't Let the Rain Come Down (Crooked Little Man)" by The Serendipity Singers.

I'm up and running with a new post at Shady's Place. Hope you and my buddy Harley can drop by. I'll be back here tamale waiting for you, sitting in the balcony-- "At The Movies!" Happy April Fools' Day and Merry Christmas, dear friend BB!

  2. As much as I loved Stevie Nick's vocals, my favorite this week was Chris deBurgh's song. Loved the Irish vibes. I think I know him mainly for Lady in Red.
