Insecure Writer's Support Group- Take your firecracker and place it up you $#!

It is the first day of the month which means it is time for the Insecure Writer's Support Group where  you can release your fears to the world and/or offer encouragement to people who are writers or are just joining in on the fun...like me.  This is hosted by Mr. Ninja Alex J Cavanaugh so please check everyone out.

Today is Canada Day-Yippee, Yahoo and all that jazz. I am proud of my country because we did kick your ass and burnt the White House down during the war of 1812 (throwing tomatoes at me yet??) but we became a nation showing our strength during the First World War. We were part of the D-Day landings (Juno) and we liberated Holland which my dad was a part of.  We have made strong headway in the medical profession, space and sports. In Film (now we're talking) we brought great actors like Mary Pickford (America's Sweetheart), Fay Wray (King Kong fame), Deanna Durbin (saved Universal Pictures), William Shatner (Star Trek), Christopher Plummer (great actor) and Jim Carrey (OK weird nutty guy).  If I want, I can go to Toronto and see great fireworks put on by professionals set to music or I can go to nearby Lake Ontario and watch fireworks also set by professionals. Will I do this? No-I want to do nothing tomorrow but read my blog buddies' posts and listen to the Battle of the Bands and make a card. This sounds wonderful except I know what will happen....morons will rule tomorrow eve.

These morons believe that buying these cheap, possibly fire-inducing, fireworks
will make them happy. In fact, right now, as I write this, morons are at work letting these stupid, useless fireworks go "pop". They are loud enough to freak my dog out and make me feel like I am under attack. Do these fireworks give out breath-taking sparkles in a variety of colours? Nope! They go "Pop"-you know like a useless lay (sorry). There is a family across the street that buy them for each long weekend/holiday in the summer. The moron parents light them and hand it to their 5 and 4 year old kids so they will let them go. I am almost wondering if they have life insurance on their kids but this is what they do and one day I will see an ambulance come. I have heard where these fireworks have landed on people's roofs and then caught fire...something to look forward to.  Boys love to blow things up but, to see them light these stupid things and see them flick in the air for 2.3 seconds before they go "pop", makes me think they have premature ejaculation issues...just saying.

Is this a rant? Your darn-Tootin it is! There is only one thing to stop these moronic galoots and that is to ban them! Alberta has banned them except for the professionals so why can't Ontario and the rest of North America? I mean I remember kids placing a firecracker in a frog once-simply not nice! So ends my rant and if you want to see fireworks, see the real kind at your town or city and enjoy it that way. If you are one of the said morons who do buy these useless "poporama" explosives, don't take it personally as I am entitled to my own opinion and will still like you...even if you are a moron concerning this:)

    1. Yup those little fireworks are not much of anything

  2. lol I have no premature issues, so yeah, I hate them too. They are damn near pointless, whoopi, they last 2 seconds, wow. Small things amuse small minds I guess.

  3. But fireworks are fun... *sniffle* I have five brothers, so my opinion might be a little jaded, but I do love the thrill of explosives. When they become weaponized, not so much, but just for fun? Why not.

  4. I'm with you, Birgit. Don't like the fireworks like these, love the public displays put on by cities, etc., but not these "individual" ones. Would always scare Koda so much (all fireworks would) but you never knew when these were going to be put off. Hated the few days before the 4th of July for that reason. And of course we lived where they were illegal, but people always managed to find them somewhere and put them off at all hours of the day and night.

Happy Canada Day though!! Never been there, but hubby and me are thinking of a trip this fall for our anniversary, so who knows?

    1. Our poor doggie goes downstairs into the tightest corner-poor thing. One day we will hear about a kid being severely injured or a house catching fire. Oh well if you are in my neck of the woods would love to show you around, not only Niagara Falls but Niagara On The Lake. This town is so very pretty and quite historical and many ghost stories to boot.

  5. There's a ban against them in Nashville and you can sit there on the 4th and listen to them going off behind you. Some idiots were setting them off in the street in front of their house a few years ago. I called the police because they were hitting telephone wires and cars--the police rolled through two hours later. There's just too much of it going on and by the time the police get around to a house, the people have long ago gone inside. It seems here that outlawing them only made people do them MORE! But there are much better fireworks shows at the park and downtown--I don't get why people spend thousands of dollars and put themselves and their kids at risk. There's a high # of kids who die/are injured each year by fireworks... Whenever I've pointed that out, though, I've been told I'm a party pooper.

    1. Party Pooper?? They need a life. I would rather see the huge fireworks especially when they are set to music. If people can get away with something, they will. What a shame about the cops not getting there right away

Yeah, I always worry when they set off fireworks in my neighborhood.

I too am a bit anxious about firecrackers and the like but we do have a few low grade explosives of our own this year. Don't worry, we'll give the resident amphibian population fair warning.

  11. I've always loved Canada and Canadians. They're not so stressed or over-materialistic as we are. I despise all fireworks. The sounds make me cringe and my heart palpitate. And I wish the kids who run around shooting them off in our neighborhood would -- yes, I'm gonna say it - blow their hands off.

    1. Oh me oh my! Hahahaaaa That would be quite the colors if their hands blew off. I love the big kind set to music but that's it not the little ones..at all, obviously:)

I'm still trying to find a good place to go see fireworks here on the 4th. I love watching the big displays but the store bought kind scare me.

  14. Well, there was the guy in Walled Lake who blew his head off on Sunday night and a 14-year old who blew his hand off last night. Thank you Rick Snyder and the idiot legislators of Michigan for allowing any idiot in the state to buy and set off fireworks. Mostly just the ones that make a really loud noise. I am with you Birgit. Ban them all for the general public and leave it to professionals. And even then I was at a show where they set the field on fire. Happy Canada Day. Come join US for the 4th.

Second, I love how you assume all of your readers are American :)

Third, I love you for hating fireworks and ranting about them. THEY ARE SO STUPID.

  16. Ah, I remember idiot kids in Toronto setting off fireworks.

Also, I didn't know you lived in Toronto!

July 1 is also the anniversary of the Battle of Beaumont Hamel, a day close to the hearts of Newfoundlanders like myself. It was the first day of the Battle of the Somme. I won't go into details here to bring everyone down, but suffice to say it didn't go well.

    Happy Canada Day!

  17. I like the safe and sane fireworks--the ones you light that put on pretty displays. The ones that just go pop? Ugh. Just a lot of noise for nothing.

  18. As a dog owner, I'm not fond of the morons that have to buy the boom-pop firecrackers. One day they are going to lose a hand or another vital body part. Here's the thing: you can't fix stupid.

  19. I'm with you, Birgit. Jeez, you would think that with our drought (hence, very very dry conditions), the powers-that-be would ban the suckers. Then, it would be very easy to find the guys with the illegal fireworks. BOOM! BLAST! Not even sparkles. And, if there are, they don't go way up there and fizzle out of harm's way. Fourth of July is just another excuse for the morons here to throw up their legal and illegal fireworks. What I don't get is why do the guys with the illegal ones do them after 11 p.m. and midnight.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Oh gosh-yes with a drought it is even worse. I agree-I heard those morons set them off after midnight!

  20. Happy Canada Day, Birgit! ☺ I completely agree with you about the fireworks. So many stressed dogs, accidents, fires, etc. It's 11:30 pm ET as a write this and they're still going on! :( They should be outlawed for private sale and confined to public displays!

  21. We do partake if the kids are visiting but keep everything safe.....unless the ocassional firework that shows up from the Indian res., bought at Ill-Eagle Fireworks. No kidding, that's the name. And it's run for cover when they go off. Today our governor is trying to ban such. We have so many fires in our state right now. We'll be going to a city display this year, so should be safe. Thanks too for the history lesson :). Canada has always been a good friend to the U.S.

    1. Sorry about the dig but I couldn't help myself:) Safety is # one but people don't even think that way. I hope it will get banned one day.

  22. In our state, you can buy pre-packaged fireworks ranging in price trom $5.99 to $35.95 at your local neighborhood supermarket. As for the official fireworks, while yes, some towns do it, the aggravation in trying to see some of these sponsored fireworks (traffic, congestion, time, etc) doesn't outweigh what you can do on your own.

However, personal responsibility is the key phrase here. If you use common sense, there shouldn't be any reason why you can't shoot off fireworks at your own domicile.

    1. Common sense is they key and I find few have this. You are right about the traffic and congestion. If people would go to a park, make sure everything is safe and not give it to 3 yr olds I may not complain as much. When I see just those fireworks that pop and don't do much else, when they let their little kids handle these fireworks, when they shoot them off right beside my house and after 11pm-I am p'od! Can you guess that??:)

  23. "Premature ejaculation issues"--hahahahahahahaha! Loved it! I'm going to run an anti-fireworks campaign here in Curaçao with that worked into the slogan somehow... Maybe that'll make an impression, since nothing else has. This island is Firecracker Hell come end of November. And the ones that suffer the most are the animals :(

Thanks for stopping over at Quiet Laughter for my very first BoTB -- loved finding your name in the comments :) I thought you might also have posted a battle and came over all eager to vote--and found instead this awesome, fiery rant that TOTALLY ECHOES MY OWN FEELINGS ABOUT *&#$@%^ FIREWORKS ;)

  27. I have neighbors who are firecracker obsessed. They set them off ALL year long (every season). Some days go by without hearing the firecrackers, but never a whole week. It is more than a bit too much. I keep hoping they will stop. Or at least just keep it to the summer!
