Thursday Movie Picks: animation for adults

Well, I suck at this one because I couldn't think of one I saw that was all animation so here are my 3. Thank heaven I had last week to dig into what is left of my brain cells and come up with these 3. Check out Wandering Through The Shelves to see what animated films the others have come up with.

1. BAMBI MEETS GODZILLA-1969

I first saw this in high school when one of the priests showed this in his religion class! I have no clue what it has to do with religion but I liked this priest. He was good looking and all the girls tried their best to sit on his lap and twirl their hair but he was always really good and never led them on. In fact, quite the opposite and he once stopped the class and asked for respect. He was true blue with a wicked humour that I loved. For anyone who has problems with deer eating their gardens, you may like this. I still love this one.

2. THANK YOU MASKED MAN-1971

This comes from Lenny Bruce.....need I say more? Ok, so this is very politically incorrect about the masked man who ends up buying Tonto and the horse for ...personal reasons.

3.  BUGS BUNNY AND FRIENDS-1940-1964

I love Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd, Porky Pig, Sylvester, Yosemite Sam, The Tasmanian Devil, Pepe Le Pew, Marvin the Martian, Claude the Cat and all the rest. People think of them from Saturday morning tv when they were butchered up due to a-holes who censored these shows and cut up many of the original shows. These cartoons were shown on the big screen with all the Warner Bros. Films. I had a hard time thinking of which one to choose but I decided to show Bugs and Daffy and Elmer...poor Daffy:)

I am slowly feeling better, weak but better and am back at work. My mom is very weak but she was wheeled into the dining area and ate a bit. She refused to go back to her room and wanted to sit in the lounge which made me feel good. My brother has his own scientific test-he buys her a coffee and donut from Tim Horton's. She ate 3/4 of the donut! This is good news. The sad news is that her friend, Gladys, passed away last Thursday from pneumonia. My mom doesn't remember so we will not bring up Gladys's name. Who know...maybe I caught this from the home??

Roger Rabbit pops in for me, although again, not all animation.

  2. Glad both of you are doing a little better.
Bambi Meets Godzilla is a classic.
Bugs Bunny had a ton of jokes that only adults would understand.

  4. Hah! Never watched the Masked Man, but your little blurb there has me thinking. :-)

  5. I recently saw Looney Tunes: Back in Action and they revamped the rabbit season/duck season bit. That movie didn't do well at the box office, but it was really kinda fun.

  7. I am also delighted that you are feeling better (saw your comment on Sandra's blog today) and so is your mother. Such good news.

I saw the first X rated cartoon in the early 80s, at least I think it was. I guess it had to be since I had to be over 21 to see it. I didn't get it. It was called either Felix or Fritz the Cat. Don't ask me what it was about, because it sure didn't stick with me.

On a different note, I have never seen any of these picks this week. I DID see Mel Blanc when he appeared at my undergrad college one year. He was quite old, but still funny. Does that count?

Hope your visit with your mom goes well for both of you.

  8. Just did an internet search and it was Fritz the Cat. It was made in 1972, but I would have been too young to see it then. I read the blurb on it, and still don't remember it. I DO think I was on a date when I saw it. Rotten Tomatoes has a blurb and explains it was the first motion picture of its kind and was X rated. BTW, if you get Netflix, apparently, according to Rotten Tomatoes, you can see it there (GRIN)!

  10. Glad you're feeling better. Bambi Meets Godzilla! I heard about that one for years before I actually got a chance to see it. I wouldn't know what to pick for this either. I love animation, but I like the movies for kids. The best ones are really for all ages.

    1. I like the animation that works for both as well actually. This is why this week was a tough one

  11. I suppose Who Framed Roger Rabbit isn't qualified as it isn't all animation. Don't know the ones you did pick.

  14. Hi Birgit - glad you're feeling easier ... and it's so good to know one's parent (loved one) is eating something and being 'livelier'.

Animations are hugely fun ... especially when shown with kids - but I remember hours of fun as kids watching and re-watching reels hired by my father - guffaws of laughter - even now they are enticing... take care and all the best - Hilary

  15. Glad you are feeling better. I think of Ratatouille as being for adults cause most kids are bored by it. My friend and I had to listen to three kids complaining throughout the entire movie that they wanted to go home. Bugs Bunny is the best. Not in my yard, but on the screen, lol.

    1. I was hoping you would have seen Bambi Meets Godzilla because I thought of you and all the problems you have with the deer in your yard. I have not seen Ratatouille so I might see it since kids were bored by it. Bugs is the best

  19. Birgit,

So happy to hear you're doing better. Being sick is stinkin' rotten. I'm doubly excited to hear that your mom is eating a teeny bit.

    The first two animations I've never seen or heard of but the classic Looney Tunes you gotta love and if you don't then there is something deeply wrong with ya, right? I always looked forward to watching this on Saturday mornings and when our kids were small got the joy of viewing some of the reruns on TV station that aired retro stuff. That's when writer knew how to put together excellent humor! Thanks for sharing and be well, my friend! {{{hugs}}}

  22. I knew from the get-go that this week would be a struggle for me since I'm more than a little indifferent to animated films but I of course have seen the Bugs Bunnys when I was a kid. I didn't watch them endlessly but they were fun on a Saturday morning before my folks got up.

To show how thin on the ground my viewing of this sort of film is I had to make a point of watching my second two picks for the week just to have enough! It was NOT a positive experience since I hated both but at least by using them it wasn't a total waste of time!

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988)-Schlubby private eye Eddie Valiant (Bob Hoskins) is hired by R.K. Maroon (Alan Tilvern) a cartoon producer to investigate an adultery scandal involving Jessica Rabbit (Kathleen Turner), who isn’t bad she’s just drawn that way, wife of Maroon's biggest star, Roger Rabbit (Charles Fleischer). Things heat up even more when owner of Toontown Marvin Acme (Stubby Kaye), Jessica's supposed lover, is found murdered, the evil Judge Doom (Christopher Lloyd) vows to catch and destroy Roger. Excellent blend of animation and actors with Kathleen Turner by way of Veronica Lake doing sensational voice work.

Cool World (1992)-A prisoner Jack Deebs (Gabriel Byrne) has created a comic book universe from his cell and one day finds himself sucked into it where he discovered not only another trapped human Frank Harris (Brad Pitt) but his lascivious creation Holli Would (Kim Basinger) who tries to entice Jack by ANY means so that she can cross over to the human world and with her a Pandora’s Box of cartoon depravity. Ugly leering film of value only to see Pitt working his way up.

A Scanner Darkly (2006)-Stupid hodgepodge about an undercover cop trying to bust a drug cartel but coming under the influence of the drug he becomes a test subject himself…or something like that. The hook here is that the movie was filmed with actors (Keanu Reeves, Wynona Ryder and Woody Harrelson among them) and then retro scoped with animation. It wasn’t worth it, all concept and little entertainment.

  23. Hi, Birgit!

I am returning to blogging today. I want to thank you for being the first to wish me well as Hurricane Irma approached. The dang storm ended up passing right through my neighborhood (all the way from Africa using GPS to find me) but we are AOK. Our thoughts and prayers remain with folks in Florida and Texas who suffered the loss of life and property.

That Bambi Meets Godzilla cartoon is hilarious! I didn't see that shock ending coming. :) I loved the edgy satirical humor of Lenny Bruce and never before saw this animated short explaining how the Lone Ranger and Tonto came to be. I heard Lenny use the word "fink." How long has it been since the insult terms "fink" and "rat fink" were in common use? I think they went out around the same time the word "gay" changed meaning. :)

I am happy to know that you are feeling better, dear friend BB, and continue to pray for your dear mother. Thank you again for being such a kind and supportive friend!

  24. I just watched Bambi Meets Godzilla. I'm still laughing. At first, I was a bit bored, but thankfully I stuck with it until the end. The perfect ending! Thank you for posting that one. Glad the priest kept a distance from the young girls making moves for him. Maybe he was trying to tell them something by showing it. At any rate, great choice on your part.
    Stay safe, my friend.

Only the photo title mentions what I believe is the street or maybe town name. No mention anywhere else on the page.

  28. The Husband asked, from across the room, "Is that 'Bambi Meets Godzilla'?"

    "How'd you know?"

"I've seen it dozens of times."

hahaha, thanks, Birgit, for helping me learn something new about the Husband. I'm glad you're feeling better and that your mom still relishes a tasty doughnut.
