Daddy's Birthday is Coming Up

My dad would be 109 come March 14th so, in honour of my dad, I am showcasing the big hits from 1913! Let's get the party rockin'...hahahaa. The flower part on the lower left is a poppy because he was a WW2 veteran who fought along the Rhine, was part of the liberation of Holland and was badly wounded in the Reischwald Forest. He is wearing my brother's hat because my brother liked to think he was a hippie back in the 1980s. Let's rock 1913 style...

1. SNOOKIE-OOKUMS BY IRVING BERLIN

I hope this plays. I first heard this song when I watched Easter Parade with Fred Astaire and Judy Garland and laughed at this dumb ass song. Every once in a while, I will call my hubby this just to see his reaction which usually looks like he is ready to call the white coats to bring me to a home. These gals seem like a good fit for the song.

2. YOU MADE ME LOVE YOU SUNG BY DORIS DAY

I have to admit, I do love this rendition by Doris from the film, "Love Me or Leave Me". It was written by James Monaco with lyrics by Joseph McCarthy (not the nutty senator who started the witch hunts in the late 40s and 50s). It has been performed by many people with Judy garland being one of the most famous.

3. TRAIL OF THE LONESOME PINE SUNG BY LAUREL & HARDY

My dad's favourite comedic team was Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy so I thought this was fitting. It's from their film "Way Out West" (1937) and it is nice to listen to especially when Stan starts singing in a low voice before going all out soprano. The Voices were Chill Wills and Rosina Lawrence which just cracked me up. This song was written by Ballard MacDonald(Lyrics) & Harry Carroll (Music).

By the way...I got a job!!! I worked on my resume so it looked better and sent it out (I got a tip from a friend of mine about this job). I have not yet signed the paperwork but I have been told I will start work on April 4th with a bankruptcy office of Goldhar & Associates. They just called me on Monday and told me that I fit for a full time position and will be working out of their Niagara Falls office. The first week I have to travel to Mississauga for training so I am very happy. So I will buy the sparkling Spumonte Bambino and you provide the plastic glasses:)))

  1. Hi, Birgit!

How sweet of you to remember your dad and mark the anniversary of his birth by playing songs from 1913, the year he was born. I'm sure you recall me telling you recently that my father was born later that same year, in October. It's fun knowing the type of music that was popular so early in the 20th century.

The first song is new to me. I doubt that I will rent Easter Parade in order to hear "Snookie Ookums" performed a second time. Once was enough. :) I am very familiar with "You Made Me Love You" and had no idea it dates back to 1913. Doris Day was my idea of a genuine star, a lady with class, the kind you don't see very often nowadays. I thoroughly enjoyed her performance of the song. I would have to say that Laurel & Hardy were and are my favorite comedy team as well. For years, I watched them just about every day on television. They were comic geniuses and, from what I gather, very nice men IRL as well. I remember seeing that bit with Stan's voice changing after Ollie bops him over the head with a giant mallet. Oh, the extreme violence in movies back then! :)

Hooray!!! I am thrilled to learn that you sealed the deal and officially landed that job, dear BB! Getting a tip from that friend of yours was fortuitous. It got you in the door and your credentials and charm did the rest. I am very happy for you. To celebrate, I will be going over Niagara Falls in a barrel. You will be able to watch me do it by looking out the window of your new office!

Although I prefer listening to oldies like "Battle Hymn of the Republic," I enjoyed these newfangled songs from 1913. :) Again it is so nice of you to show us a pic of your dad and present this 109th birthday song serenade.

Once again, congratulations on securing a new job, Birgit! Have a great day and I'll see you tamale in the balcony-- "At The Movies!" (Don't be late for our date! :)

    1. Yes, these 2 gals have lovely voices but they don’t put the humour into the song the way Astaire and Garland did. It’s actually a satire song on how lovey doves couples can be ad nauseam.
I had no idea, either that this song, sung by Day, Is as old as it is but it’s a great one.
I’m glad you like Laurel & Hardy like my dad and me. They tru”y did love each other unlike so many others( Abbott & Costello and Martin & Lewis).
I am happy to have this job and will feel better once I sign the contract. Funny you mention The Battle Hymn as this is one of my mom’s favourites and we had a version play at her funeral as it was so important to her.
Don’t go down the falls in a barrel as it just would get you too wet🤪

  3. What a lovely birthday tribute to dear ole pops! I know he's smiling down at your song selections and ending things with his favorite comedy act. I've heard the expression snookie ookums but I didn't know there was a song. Congrats on the new job! I know you're on cloud 9. That's super good news to read! :)

    1. There is and it is a funny one if you listen to the Astaire/ Garland version. I’m glad you enjoyed the music and thank you for what you wrote.

  4. Love the hat! ☺ This is a sweet tribute to your Dad. What a brave soldier he was! ♥ Fun to listen to these old songs - the only one I knew was Doris Day. She had a beautiful voice. The Laurel and Hardy one didn't work for me, so I found an alternate link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzZDW0-tpTA

How wonderful that you have a new job already! CONGRATS! 🥂🍾 And, thank goodness the commute isn't too bad, given the ridiculous gas prices right now. All the best for the future!

    1. I watched that Laurel & Hardy clip on YouTube and thought it was good to show here but I was wrong so thank you for putting it here. Thank goodness the commute isn’t too bad because, yes, the prices are nuts.

  9. A lovely way to pay homage to your father. I've heard the Doris Day song, but not even heard OF the others.
