Thursday Movie Picks: TV Edition- Royalty

I need to go to sleep so I am writing this quick, well, quick for me. Wandering Through The Shelves wanted me to think this week because most of the royalty shows that are out or have been out recently, I have not seen.  Here are my picks with one being a stretch...well, maybe 2.

1. THE SECRETS OF ISIS-1975-1977

This was shown on Saturday mornings and I watched every one even though it was pretty cheesy, but I thought the leading lady, Joanna Cameron, was very pretty. Basically, a teacher visits Egypt and finds this ancient amulet belonging to Queen Hatshepsut. Anyone who is an ancestor of this queen Hatcheckgirl, will have her powers. Guess what? Yup the teach has them and decides to help the teen kids who get into trouble, get out of trouble. When the teach sees something bad happening, she takes this amulet she wears on her neck and puts it on and she transforms into the goddess Isis who can speak to animals and  has a way with amulets or whatever. I’m trying to remember but I thought it was cool. We need Isis to kick some ass in the schools nowadays.

2. WONDER WOMAN- 1976-1979

To me, I will always have a soft spot for Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman who fought the bad guys while secretly lusting after the major Steve. She is a princess from the secret island where women rule. They are the ancient warriors of blah. When good looking Lyle Waggoner is saved by Lynda Carter, her mom, Cloris Leachman, tells her she can nurse him but can’t bring him back to the States. A big event takes place to determine who the best warrior is and, even though Lynda is banned by her mommy to be part of this, she hides under some blonde wig and wins the events. Guess who is bringing the bad boy huggy bear home? Yup, Princess Diana where she dons eyeglasses to hide who she truly is(Why is everyone in the entire world fooled by eyeglasses?). With her bracelets and lasso of truth, she can best all the bad evil guys in that little suit and her ta-tas never fall out.

3. XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS- 1995-2001

I’m guilty as charged. I watched this show and thought it was quite good to be honest. Xena was one evil bitch who liked placing her enemies’ heads on a stick but she found out she would rather be good so, with her trusty sidekick, blond innocent Gabriele, baring her midriff, they fight evil everywhere they go. Sometimes, the gods help or hinder them or sometimes a goofy guy who wishes to be a Gladiator, helps them out. There were some heavy episodes especially when  the devil comes on board to spread evil but there were fun ones too especially when Bruce Campbell paid visit as the king of thieves. I enjoyed watching this...yes...me.

What Royal shows can you think of?

  1. Hi, Birgit!

I hope you are having a better week, dear friend.

The Secrets of Isis is new to me this morning. Shady sez teachers today need superpowers to deal with everything being throw at them. I remember the star of the series, Joanna Cameron, as the nurse on Marcus Welby in the early 70s. It's a shame she died relatively young at the age of 73 from complications of a stroke.

I remember the Wonder Woman series and Xena, but didn't watch them. In recent years, Lynda Carter appeared in five episodes of a series I do watch, Supergirl, in the role of the President of the United States of America. Imagine that - a lady President!!!

Lucy Lawless has appeared in three TV series I watched in recent years - No Ordinary Family, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Ash vs Evil Dead (the latter now a radio show at Shady's Place).

Everybody's going to name The Crown, and it's the only TV series about royals that I can think of at this hour of the morning. However, if we were allowed to include movies, there would be only one choice - the definitive movie about royalty:

Queen of Outer Space starring Zsa Zsa Gabor
(who could be a royal pain in the ---).

Have a happy Thursday and a safe and restful weekend, dear friend BB!

    1. I bet The Crown, Game of Thrones and everything British will be winners. I haven’t seen almost all of these so I dug into these fun shows. I thought you would have watched Wonder Woman. It is a shame that Joanna died so young...to me she was too young. I just saw some episodes of Spartacus where Lucy Lawless was lawless and showing quite a bit.

  2. I'm not a big follower or fan of royalty so I don't pursue any shows of that nature. In your own twist approaching this topic, I might have seen some other examples but I can't think of any right now.

I've never heard of Secrets of Isis but I wasn't watching TV much in those years. I've heard of the other two and watched a few episodes of each, but was never a regular fan.

When I was managing a costume company some years ago one of my customers was a statuesque woman who hired out as a Xena lookalike. She also did other party characters and had people working for her in those roles. Interesting lady she was. We'd usually chat awhile whenever she came in to buy supplies from me. Without her costume and make-up she just looked like a big-boned tall woman, but when she was fully adorned as Xena the similarity with the real character was pretty much on spot.

    1. Isis was on a short time and during Saturday morning tv. That’s pretty neat that this woman could transform herself into someone so strong and striking looking.

  3. I like the way you went with this! Very inventive. :-)

I have seen episodes of all three but was never a faithful viewer of any. I'm actually more familiar with Lucy Lawless from the miniseries Spartacus that Xena.

I thought along the more traditional royalty lines. The first two are a pair of favorites from the 70's both British made-The Six Wives of Henry the VIII with Keith Michell and Elizabeth R with the amazing Glenda Jackson. The third was the more recent The Borgias.

    1. I’m glad you like my slant on this but it’s only because I lack seeing most shows starring royals. I almost went with The Borgias but I grew tired of it pretty quickly. Yes, I saw a few episodes of Lawless being lawless in Spartacus. I also almost went with Sitting Image episodes and even Carol Burnett. I hope you like my post from yesterday. 3 Oscar songs...well one that won, one nominated and one that got neither the. Try to guess.

  4. That first one sounds like it would have been my speed, but I had never heard of it. I loved Wonder Woman. Lynda Carter has been on Twitter lately posting old pics of herself with snarky commentary. She's been popping up on some interesting shows, too.

I like your theme within a theme.

  5. Birgit,

I watched the first two TV series for sure. I did see some of the episodes of Xena but I never really liked it quite as well as the other two, though. How cool you mentioned Xena and I put up that sketch today. :) Oh yeah, I see what you were referring to in my original pencil sketch and how easily that can mistaken for something else but I assure you, it's just shading. :) Thanks for visiting this month. I've been horrible with my return visits.

  7. The only one I saw was Xena. I watched Hercules too. I was very young. I think if I saw it now I'd find they probably did not age well and just seem all silly.

  8. I saw a couple of episodes of Wonder Woman as it plays every Saturday on a cable network here. I saw part of one Xena. She was fierce. I've not heard or Joanna Cameron, but ISIS is a rather bad word in today's world. Too bad it takes away from what Cameron obviously accomplished.

  9. They used to show Wonder Woman on MeTV, and we started watching it and really liked it. Lynda Carter was the only woman I ever saw who could make the dowdy fashions of the late '70's attractive...

  10. Nice choices! I don't know Secrets of Isis but the premise is wonderful. I might have to check it out.

How about Queen's Gambit? It's chessboard royalty but I think it counts.

  13. Speaking of Lynda Carter...one of the most popular movies on my ship in the 70s was "Bobbi Jo and the Outlaw." Not because it was a plot-driven blockbuster. It was because we got to see Lynda Carter topless. Sailors. Pigs. Whaddayagonnado?

  14. Oh Xena - I remember watching that show when I was a kid.
