Happy New Year....Soon

Well, this is what hubby will be doing when the ball drops on Saturday. I will stay up because I always want to stay up and see the stupid ball drop before I get to bed and sleep in the new year. I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas as I have. Hubby spoiled me and I am so grateful and he is grateful for what I gave him and that makes me happy. Now, on with the music....

1. HAPPY NEW YEAR SUNG BY JUDY GARLAND-1957

This is a somewhat quiet song maybe even melancholy, but it sounds so pretty especially with Judy singing it. This song was written by Gordon Jenkins back in 1949.

2. HAPPY NEW YEAR SUNG BY ABBA-1980

This  song comes from their last album, “Super Trouper,”  sung by Agnetha Fältskog (the blond one). I got a kick that this was originally titled, “ Daddy Don’t Get Drunk on Christmas Day.” Which cracks me up. Oh, and guess what? Agnetha’s mom’s name is....Birgit.

3. AULD LAND SYNE BY GUY LOMBARDO-1947

We all know this song, which was written by  Scotsman, Robert Burns, back in 1788 and was set to tune back in 1799. I honestly didn’t think it was that old...the melody not the poem. Guy Lombardo, Born in London, Ontario-Canada, made this tune famous with his Royal Canadian orchestra and we hear his version every year after the ball comes down in Times Square. My dad loved watching his New Year’s Eve special on the CBC every year until Guy died in 1977.

Wishing you a very great and healthy New Year ahead!

  1. New Year's Eve has never been a favorite holiday for me. When I was growing up, everyone would go to my aunt's in Windsor and the adults would go off to the Elmwood Casino or one of the Italian clubs for a party. My cousins and I would stay at home and await their drunken return. ugh! I went to NYC once to see the ball drop. Didn't do a thing for me. I will also be sleeping long before midnight arrives. Happy New Year.

    1. It is over-rated and drinking is the thing to do. I'm surprised you were in that huge crowd in NYC. I would never want to be in that.

  2. Happy New Year, Birgit - this is my favourite version of Auld Lang Syne. I prefer it to the more well known tune.

  3. Hi, Birgit!

I hope you saw the email I sent you yesterday and knew in advance that I would be very late today. Mrs. S and I just got back home after a 6-hour trip (adventure!) to the airport and back to pick-up her brother flying down from Atlanta. First, his flight was delayed due to mechanical problems. Then he needed to switch plans altogether. His luggage came down on a flight an hour later, requiring us to sit in the airport twiddling our thumbs. In addition, the traffic was, as the Christmas song goes, "terrific."

As you recall, you and I were discussing Deanna Durbin on my recent Jackie Evancho post. In case you never saw them, there are some great pictures of Deanna with Judy Garland when they were both age 13/14, taken on the set of the 1936 MGM short Every Sunday. Just Google "Deanna Durbin Judy Garland" and you will find many excellent shots of the girls. It was nice to hear Judy sing a holiday song this afternoon

I didn't know that Aggie's mother's name is Birgit. Thanks for sharing that tidbit. Please remember, though - there is only one "BB." :) I enjoyed ABBA's "Happy New Year," a song I have been familiar with ever since catching ABBA fever some 20 years ago.

Yessum, I certainly remember Guy Lombardo's New Year's Eve CBS network broadcast. My folks tuned it in year after year. Dick Clark's live NYE show on ABC offered an event and a musical lineup that appealed more to young people, but I enjoyed switching back and forth on New Year's Eves and watching a little of both.

If you'd like to watch the ball drop in Shady Square, then please join the thousands who are attending Shady Seaweed's 62nd annual New Year's Rockin' Eve in the Shady. I hope to spot you in the sea of faces.

Birgit, I thank you very much for all these wonderful years of friendship, a friendship that goes beyond blogging. I invite you to come along and join the fun in 2023 as I continue to do my best to keep you entertained with music and memories at Shady's Place. Please give my good buddy Harley a thorough head to tail scratchin' and have a safe and happy new year's celebration, dear friend BB!

    1. I did respond to your email and glad you made it back but what an ordeal! The airlines are crazy right now. I'm glad you enjoyed my New Years tribute and how can anyone not love ABBA.
I, too, am so happy to have you as a dear friend even though we have never met. I enjoy your blog so much and look forward to your writings.
Yes, I saw that short with Judy and Deanna. They ate 2 different singers but they worked well together. I always laugh when everyone comes running to see them especially the old man in the wheelchair.
      Happy new year

  4. Happy New Year! I'm sure I'll be asleep before midnight. The only one of these songs I know is Auld Lang Syne. Mother always watched Guy Lombardo so I remember the show well.

    Love,
    Janie

  6. Three good songs. I grew up on Guy Lombardo's New Years Eve performances (shown on local TV) at New York City's Waldorf-Astoria hotel. I still stay up every New Years Eve. No New Year's Eve is complete without Auld Lang Syne - my favorite cover right now is Rod Stewart's.

  7. I've never heard of any of these songs before, but I enjoyed the ABBA one especially. I hope you are awake when the ball drops. It may have already dropped where you are right now.

    Happy 2023, dear.
