Thursday Movie Picks:TV Picks-2022 Freshman Series

Wandering Through The Shelves has decided to do the TV edition each month and this is about the new TV shows from 2022. I have to admit, I have not seen many but was surprised that I could pick 3. Here they are...

1. WEDNESDAY

I have only been able to see this brilliant series due to my ex sending me the series through One. He sends them to me via Messenger and I was not really expecting to be like everyone else and love it...but I do! Jenny Ortega, who is 20 but looks 15, plays the titular character and she does it par excellence. She is sent to a school of outcasts where, she is still an outcast but doesn’t give a rat’s ass. Thing is sent to watch her and report back to her parents but she finds Thing pretty much right away. I love the character of Thing. Strange that a hand can show emotion and become one of my favourites in this series. I also love her perky werewolf roommate who loves to hug. Did I mention there are horrible murders going on and Wednesday wants to find out who is the killer. It’s grusome but also very funny and Wednesday’s dance, which Ortega made up, has become a sensation. I can’t wait for the 2nd season

2. INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE

I love the books and this series does stray from the books but still holds onto the meat of the story. It starts with an freakishly close sounding and looking Anthony Bourdain journalist interviewing Louis, in Dubai, about his life. It is a continuation from their first time they met, but the journalist is not as innocent as he used to be and has no problem asking tough questions. We meet Louis as a business owner in New Orleans who has a mother, sister and brother. He meets Lestat who talks freely and knows how to put on the charms but also gets himself in trouble with his no hozlds barred mouth. They love women...and each other even when Lestat makes Louis a vampire and Louis distances himself from his family. It is well acted by the leads and it is lush looking with great costumes. It’s worth a good look.

3. STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS

I do love Star Trek and this series is a cut above bringing back the old episodic style where the episode starts and ends in that one hour. It’s not like a soap opera style which is refreshing and the cast is well done  but I only know of Rebecca Romijn of Blue Mystique fame  from The X-Men franchise.  This Star Trek is about the adventures of Captain Pike, Spock and his #1 played by Rebecca.  And it is well played out. Now, Rebecca needs to stick with this and not that New Real Love Boat crap she did with her husband...dreck. no, I only saw the commercials for it and that's enough.

What new shows have you seen?

  1. Hi, Birgit!

I hope you made it home safely from Niagara in the snowstorm, dear friend, and also hope you are feeling better today. Did you give that belly of Harley's a good scratchin' when you got home? I wish I were there to give him some lubbins.

Yessum, there's been lotsa buzz about Wednesday in recent months, and I did not hesitate to jump in on the series because I was already a fan of young actress Jenna Ortega. In season 2 of the hit TV series You, Janna impressed me in the role of teenage Ellie, a "precocious, unsupervised kid who thinks she's not a kid."

Watch this 2 minute clip, the scene in which Jenna's character first appears on the show:

i have seen the baseball movie Interview with the Umpire, but not the TV series Interview with the Vampire. :) Based on your praise about the production being lush and the period costumes authentic, I am interested in watching, especially since it was revealed in the trailer that it comes to us from the executive producer of Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad, two series I love.

i have never followed the Star Trek series, neither TV nor films, and therefore I will probably skip Strange New Worlds, but I can highly recommend The Orville (not a freshman series, but just saying...), and I am also eager to find out if any of those ultra-attractive singles find love aboard The Real Love Boat. :)

Thanks for a great week of friendship and entertainment, dear friend BB. Stay safe up there and enjoy the rest of your week and weekend!

    1. Yes, I made it home but some chick stopped in the middle of the road because of oncoming traffic. Thankfully, my hubby was able to squeeze passed her and the ditch. We hit a mailbox and that's it. She should not have been driving. I am.still k bad pain. But Harley gives sweet hugs.
I love The Orville and think it's it's great show.

  2. I've seen Wednesday and part of Star Trek! We just got a preview of Paramount Plus so my husband has been binging all the Star Trek shows. He keeps jumping back and forth between them so it's hard to keep track, but I loved Discovery and Picard too.

    1. I know you like Wednesday. Good for your hubby to wstch all the ST shows. Did you know there was an animated series in the 70s with the entire original cast?

  4. I binged Wednesday, kind of at the tail end of while I was recovering from Covid. I don't binge, so that tells you how much I enjoyed it. I have not seen the other two, but I've been meaning to, so I may get to them eventually.

I think I do have three for this. I was pleasantly surprised by Alaska Daily. Not a Hillary Swank fan, but the show is really pretty good. Then there's Fire Country about prisoners who fight fires in California. And I'm drawing a blank for a third. There's something I just saw, but it's not coming to me. Ah well.

    1. I don't usually binge either but Wednesday was so good and well acted. I, too, love Alaska, Daily s d feel the same about Swank. I'm glad they talk about all the native girls who have gone missing. It's so sad that this is happening but not much is talked about

  5. I have heard of all three of these but haven't seen a single one. I'm not much of a sci-fi/horror guy so these aren't really up my alley, that being said I've heard good things about "Wednesday".

The best I can do is two newbies, that's all I've tried this year. A far cry from when I was young and would watch a fresh dozen at least every single season.

The first is the spin-off of "The Rookie" called "The Rookie-Feds" with Niecy Nash-Betts. It's okay but still finding its feet. The other-Marcia Gay Harden's new show "So Help Me Todd" I like more. It's cute, funny and clever at times so I'm hoping it makes it.

    1. There's something about Nash that ribs me the wrong way. I think she is too brash for my tastes. I have yet to see So Help Me but it looks cute and I'd give it a go. I almost chose Akaska, Daily. I like the show even though I am not a Swank fan. It's quite good and at least they are talking about the true and sad cases of so many indigenous girls who have gone missing. I have also seen just one episode of Annika. It's a British show about a police detective who has a daughter that needs therapy . It stars the lead lady from yhat great show " Unforgotten." The shoes breaks Down the 4th wall because she starts to talk yo us. It's different and I'd like to see more

    1. It is excellent and I knew who the killer was early on but I didn't know all the dark twists. So well fine and acted. That kid from the coffee shop gave me chills

  9. I haven't watched any of these. I've heard that Wednesday is very popular. I might like Interview With The Vampire. I'm not sure where it's available. I'm not a Star Trek person at all. I watched George & Tammy (streaming on Showtime) and liked it a lot.

    Love,
    Janie

  11. Hi Birgit - great choices! I enjoyed all three series, even though IWTV differs significantly from the Ann Rice novel. Jenny Ortega is brilliant as Wednesday!

We've been watching some good new shows on streaming services lately, like Slow Horses (Gary Oldman, Apple TV), 1883 and 1923 (prequels to Kevin Costner's Yellowstone on Paramount+).

  13. I've not seen any of these shows, which is odd because I love a good mystery.

I am also here hoping this will publish. I tried to publish the musical instrument comment, but it fails to publish. I'll try here. Here's what I wrote:

The only one I am familiar with is Lara' s Theme, although I never saw the movie. I have a collection of musical instruments on my walls and tables, so I was especially happy to see that collage of musical instruments.

Seems I can't comment because I don't know how to get hold of you.
