Why Not! Acrostic

Ok, I hope I can add my name to the Monday Music Moves Me  since Cathy from Curious as a Cathy and John from The Sound of One Hand Typing asked me.  I normally just do 3 songs but I am choosing songs that spell my first name. So here we go...

1. BEGIN THE BEGUINE WITH FRED ASTAIRE & ELEANOR POWELL-1940

This is one of the best dance numbers ever done to this famous song written by Cole Porter back in 1935. I can watch this over and over. Fred was 41 at this point, can you believe it?

2. I HAD A DREAM SUNG BY ABBA-1979

This comes from their "Voulez Vous" album and it’s a song my mom loved....so do I.

3.  RIDE MY SEE-SAW BY THE MOODY BLUES-1968

I love The Moody Blues and this song is not as famous but still famous enough and one I always loved. It’s from their album, “In Search of a Lost Chord.”

4. GET HAPPY SUNG BY JUDY GARLAND-1950

This Song was written by  Harold Arlen with lyrics by Ted Koehler back in 1930 and introduced by Ruth Etting but I always loved this rendition by the great Garland from the musical, "Summer Stock."

5. I LIKE MYSELF SUNG BY GENE KELLY-1955

This song was written by...Gene Kelly for the film, “It’s Always Fair Weather” and he performed this with regular roller skates he bought in a hardware store He didn’t alter the skates or anything like that, he just started to work out the dance number with regular skates. He was 43 yrs old when he did this number!

6. TIME TO SAY GOODBYE SUNG BY SARAH BRIGHTMAN & ANDREA BOCELLI-1995

As soon as I heard this song, I had to get the CD and am so glad I did and still have it. This song is what brought Andrea Bocelli to fame. It’s written  by Francisco Sartori with lyrics by Lucio Quarantotto and has been redone by many others since then but nothing beats this version...in my humble opinion.

Hope you enjoyed this lengthy music post. I may not join every week but, I thought I would, this time:)

  1. Hi, Birgit!

I hope you are well and in good spirits this week, dear friend. I see that my good buddy Harley is open for business. :) Don't you just wanna "motorboat" his tummy for him? I know he'd like that.

I appreciate how you spelled "Birgit" with song titles, dearie. I must say that I was very impressed with Eleanor Powell's dancing dexterity in that "B the B" routine. We all knew that Fred was an ace hoofer, but who knew Ellie was, too? I'll bet you did. Forgive my ignorance of the vintage song and dance movie genre. The only dancing I ever watch is the dirty kind.

Nearly an ABBA "completist," I am therefore familiar with "I Had A Dream." It's a sweet and spiritual song.

"Ride My See-Saw" is an excellent choice, because it is a great song but seldom heard, at least by my ears. It brings back memories of my sophomore year at university. The Moody Blues were popular at PSU. Many students owned and played their albums, and their songs played regularly on the campus radio station.

i read that Judy Garland struggled during production of Summer Stock. She had gained weight and was hooked on prescription meds. Even so, "Get Happy" is an entertaining number. FF to the 1960s and Judy's decline was much more evident.

Gene Kelly's "I Like Myself" is a terpsichorean treat. His dancing isn't bad either.

I also enjoyed the operatic duet to conclude your name spelling challenge.

If I were playing, I'd pick the following songs to spell "Shady."

    "Sugar, Sugar" - The Archies
"Have You Ever Seen The Rain" - CCR
"At The Hop" - Danny And The Juniors
"Don't Throw Your Love Away" - The Orlons/The Searchers
"Young Girl" - Gary Puckett And The Union Gap

Thanks for the Wednesday musical entertainment, dear friend BB. Have a fine day and I'll be back to see you tomorrow. You'll find me sitting in the balcony-- "At The Movies!" FYI - I invite you to take the musical brain buster quiz just posted at Shady's Place. Can your noggin pass the test? Denny the Dell Rat wants to know!

    2. I love the songa you chose. Rhe first one makes me think of Betty and Veronica...my best friend and I dresses up like them and lip-synced to this song.
Eleanor Powell Qasim the beat tap dancer. .ever. when Fred and Herman this movie, they were figuring out the sand steps with a piano player. When the piano player fainted at around 11pm at night, they.kneq they had to call it quits. She was very strong and Fred loved dancing with her.
I'm glad you like all my choices. Have a fab day and weekend

  2. Birgit,

Of course, you can add your name to the 4M party! I'm thrilled that you did, too. How cool for you to use three features from musicals. I always enjoy seeing Fred Astaire dancing. Judy Garland looks cute wearing a tailored man's suit jacket. I like that look! How cool is that Gene Kelly tap dancing in roller skates!! I'd kill myself attempting that. I barely can stand in roller skates. You did a fabulous job spelling your name. Please feel free to join us on the dance floor anytime, my friend!

  5. Birgit, you don't have to post every week. Also, there's no rule about how many songs you have to post. So we'll look forward to you posting when you are In the Mood. What I liked the most about your post was the dance numbers. I couldn't believe the dance routine Gene Kelly did with the skates. I don't think I've ever seen roller skate tap dancing before. Fred Astaire's dance was frosting on this musical cake. I love the Moody Blues. So, a post to savor.
