It’s too damn hot to be outside..I hate it and can’t wait for 20C since we have been having 36 but feeling like 43C with the humidex. I can’t breathe and I hate it. Ok, I’m done with my rant, this week over at Wandering Through The Shelves, it is all about the great outdoors and I love the outdoors when I can breathe. Oh, sorry, I said I wouldn’t bitch any more. Anyway here are my 3...
1. THE BEAR-1988
This is a film that had me on the edge of my seat and it was all about a cub who tries to survive the elements, other predators especially Man. I am a huge animal lover and hate Ted Nugent who thinks that killing bears is his god given right....jerk. I don’t like it when I see an animal die even though I do watch rescue shows but this seems to end on a mostly positive note. Where was I? Talk about stream of consciousness! Anyway, to see amazing cinematography along with a bear coming of age, love and friendship, see this film starring Bart the Bear who befriends the cub.
2. THE GREAT OUTDOORS-1988
This is not a fantastic comedy but it’s fun to watch especially with 2 funny comedians, Dan Aykroyd and the wonderful John Candy. John Candy, with his family, rent a cottage to enjoy the great outdoors only to be slightly perturbed when Candy’s brother in law and his family, which includes 2 freaky red haired twins, surprise them. They deal with water-skiing, bats, those freaky twins, raccoons, each other and Bart the bear who gets a bit bald on both ends. I watched it again recently and had a good laugh.
3. THE EDGE-1997
Anthony Hopkins is married to a younger, beautiful model who travel up north, with a photographer, played by Alec Baldwin, and crew in tow, to take in some great outdoors. They are trying to find some mountain man when their small plane crashes in the middle of nowhere. The pilot is killed which leaves 3 to try to get home dealing with wolves and one very smart but very nasty bear...played by...Bart the bear who was quite scary to say the least! This is thriller that held my attention and made me grit my teeth. I know that both actors were very impressed with Bart because he was so genial and intelligent. You wouldn't know it from watching Bart that he was so docile.

The only one of these three outdoorsy movies I have seen is the first one, The Bear. Mrs. Shady and I watched it together shortly after we met and started dating. I agree with you about The Motor City Mad Man. Parenting 101: All it takes to turn a boy into a man... a real man... is to hand him a gun and show him how to kill an innocent animal.
While I love Dan Aykroyd, John Candy, Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin (but NOT brother Stephen Baldwin), I did not see The Great Outdoors or The Edge. Generally speaking, I prefer civilization - films and TV series set in cities, towns or the suburbs. (Hooterville, however, is AOK.) That picture at the end of your post is awesome. I don't know if I'd feel at ease standing next to Bart the Bear. Is that The Nuge standing next to him sizing him up for the kill?
The only movies about the great outdoors I typically like are the ones about a group of friends at a cabin in the woods that are attacked by a monster or monsters. That said, I highly recommend Zombeavers (2014), the gripping true story of beavers that ingest toxic chemicals, turn into zombies and threaten a group of young people at (you guessed it...) a cabin in the woods.

It is sickening about the guns. In the picture, that is Bart's trainer who adored the bear and vice versa. They are highly respected for how well they treat their animals. If you like a good thriller, you should see The Edge. Zombeavers?? I must..must see this movie as it sounds just as good as The Killer Shrews

The Edge was really good. I also liked The Grey.
ReplyDeleteThe Edge is excellent. I am just ok about The Grey. It is well acted but I didn't like how the wolves were presented as some sort of evil animals out to kill all of them.

ReplyDeleteThat is one scary movie with that bear. My dad encountered more than one bear when he was a lumberman/logger during the 1930's and 1950's. He respected the bear, loved wolves and disliked the moose...he said they were ornery, unpredictable and stupid and could charge you at any moment

DeleteThe Great Outdoors seems such an obvious pick I can't believe it never occurred to me! Your right its not a great classic comedy but inoffensive enough and John Candy had such an amiable presence it's always nice to see him.
ReplyDeleteI just watched The Edge at last within the last year, no particular reason I just kept missing it, and thought it was a fine suspenseful adventure with two strong lead performances, and yes the bear was scary.
I'm sure I've seen bits of The Bear over the years but never given it a proper watch.
I went with sort of a survivalist theme and one of my picks if I remember correctly is one you are a fan of.
A Walk in the Woods (2015)-Travel writer Bill Bryson (Robert Redford) decides to hike the Appalachian Trail and since he is no longer a young man at his wife’s (Emma Thompson) urging he is accompanied by his old friend Stephen Katz (Nick Nolte) who proves to be more of a hindrance than help. Based on Bryson’s best seller.
Alive (1993)-After crashing in the Andes Mountains, the Uruguay's rugby team struggle for survival as their initial hopes of a quick rescue dwindle. As days turn to weeks and their supplies run out they are confronted with grim choices that must be made. Brutal yet compelling and based on an actual event.
Jeremiah Johnson (1972)-After the Mexican-American War ends veteran soldier Jeremiah Johnson (Robert Redford), heads to the mountains to live in isolation. He meets seasoned mountain man (Will Geer) who takes him under his wing and over the years he carves out a life until he incurs the ire of the Crow Indians.
I want to see A Walk In The Woods and hope to as I add it to my huge list:). I saw the original film of Alive and was grossed out. Yes! I would have chosen JJ but I already spoke about this film so I’m glad you chose it. It’s so good and Will Greer was excellent in this film.

DeleteSeen all three at my sea. The Great Outdoors is a fine one to watch, but yeah, not the greatest. Backcountry was one I watched on Netflix a while back, reaffirmed why I don't screw with bears.

DeleteThe great outdoors is one topic that will immediately turn me against a movie. I did see The Edge. I didn't hate it. But I'll never love it because it was set in the wilderness. There's just something about stories set in the outdoors... I can't connect to them.

ReplyDeleteIt would've been nice to see what John Candy would've played had he lived longer. He won my heart in "Uncle Buck". I have to look for "The Great Outdoors". My outdoor choices: "Continental Divide" with John Belushi and "Wild" with Witherspoon come to mind.
