Thursday Movie Picks:TV Edition- 2019 Freshmen Series

I must do a correction from last week....last week’s suggestion for Best Score came from Brittani, a great blogger who loves film and Wandering Through The Shelves chose her suggestion that we talked about last week. This week is all about TV and the new shows of 2019..of which I lack big time and have been searching for anything new that I am watching. I think I found 3 and if they don’t fit...too bad!

1. CORONER

This stars Serinda Swan as Jenny Cooper, as a, well, yes, a coroner who figures out who the killer is...think an updated Quincy but with a hot chick with anxiety issues. I actually find this drama quite good because it deals with the case but it is also character driven and it is a Canadian show. You see how she figures out the cause of death and the murderer in a nice succinct hour (plus you see Toronto in all parts) while trying to deal with her teenage son.

2. PERFECT HARMONY

I hope this lasts because I enjoy this quirky comedy about a disillusioned, grieving widower who ends up in Kentucky and finds “redemption” teaching a bunch of misfit adults how to sing properly. He is a disgraced music professor from Princeton who is teaching the ragtag group of nuts  like the perky gal who is just sunshine and cream. Her deadbeat, bubba ex; a very tall, deep voiced hunk of man, a golly gee Indian minister, a no nonsense maybe husband killer gal and others round out the characters in this funny show. I have a feeling it won’t last.

3. THE ZOO

OK, so this may have appeared the year before but I found it last year and it’s all about the zoo from the Bronx and how they care for their animals and are even part of trying to rehabilitate animals to go back into the wild. I love animal shows and am all for helping animals when they need it. Anyone who kills endangered animals just to make their dicks not seem so, so small ( hear that Trump brats), need to feel how those poor defenceless animals feel meaning, the dickless can go out in a park and I will be there with my high powered rifle, a super scope, night vision goggles and I’ll just wait until they come into range. Oops I got off track, anyway, animals deserve our protection and considering that zoos often have endangered animals and are their only hope of survival, I think zoos are important.

I know we are talking about 2019 but has anyone seen Picard? I just saw the first episode on the Sci-Fi network and I am loving it. Great acting, story, effects...it has it all...forget STD( Star Trek Discovery and yes I know what STD stand for and think it’s apt) and watch Picard.

Which 3 shows have you seen  if you have seen any?

  1. Yes! Saw the first episode of Picard and thought it was awesome. It would certainly be my pick. Also watched a couple episodes of The Zoo. With the success of Australia Zoo's Crikey It's the Irwins, every zoo has a show now. (There's one for San Diego as well.)

    1. Yes, you are right about The Zoo and Canada had one way before the Irwins. I can't wait to see the next episode of Picard which airs tonight!

  2. Aww you didn't have to do a correction. :)

I always forget about Animal Planet shows technically qualifying for this. I've been watching Crickey It's the Irwins with my son lol. I haven't seen any of your picks this week. I really want to watch Picard but I don't have CBS's streaming site and won't get it.

    1. Yes, I did! Your theme from last week was great! Animal Planet one I watch often. If you have the Sci-Fi channel, it might be on that one

    2. I don't have CBS all access either.

  3. Coroner sounds like a show right up my alley! Wonder if I can find a way to watch it in the States.

  4. I tried to watch the Coroner, but didn't like the personal issues. Maybe I should give it another go. Only new series I am watching is FBI Most Wanted.

    1. Glad you get the show. They always pick a different part of Toronto to showcase the area. It's cold here today, the way it should be but sunny right now. Lucky you..I'm at work

  6. When we start talking about TV shows of the past 30 to 40 years then I'm pretty clueless. Haven't seen any of the shows you mentioned and for that matter never heard of them. I'm just not into TV shows these days and when I do get into one then it gets cancelled or just disappears or something. Most recently I've been watching Emergence and Manifest but I figure they'll eventually just go away with no story resolution. That's one of the reasons I don't like investing time in TV shows: They just go on and on and never seem to end up anywhere.

    1. There are so many shows that are now on Netflix, HBO etc... that I just don't watch. I do like Manifest and find it a good show but let's hope the writers don't screw things up because there are so many subplots etc...

  7. I just saw that "Star Trek: Picard" is going to be on Pluto TV, an ad-supported streaming service, coming fairly soon.

I've been watching one new show, "The Unicorn," which is on CBS on Thursday nights and streamable on CBS.com (how I watch it). It's about a widower with two daughters who, after a year of widowhood, decides that he's ready to start dating again. His neighbors on either side, a Black couple with several kids and a couple where the wife is a high-strung professional type and a rather goofy metrosexual (that's the only word I can use to describe him), are really excited, because a man in his position (formerly married and newly widowed who runs his own business) is a "unicorn," a one-in-a-million creature on the dating scene and considered quite a catch. I like it because he's a father who doesn't get treated like an idiot (like most fathers in sitcoms), the neighbors are real pieces of work, and the dynamic between the characters (particularly between him and his daughters) is great. I don't know if they plan on bringing it back next year, but I like what I've seen so far.

  8. I don't think I've watched anything on network tv new this year. I watched The Witcher, You, and Conra Kai on streaming, but I know you don't have those lol

  9. I don't know any of your shows but I am just about to put episode 2 of Picard on and agreed. It is a super show. Hope episode 2 is as good as episode 1. HAppy weekend. hugs-Erika

  10. Coroner sounds a lot like Crossing Jordan, a show I really liked, but it was set in Boston. I love it when Toronto is the featured city, because it usually masquerades as some nondescript U.S. location. I'll be checking that one out! It comes on after Murdoch Mysteries, right? Haven't seen the other two, but I'm with you about killing defenceless animals. I caught one episode of The Unicorn, but otherwise haven't seen anything new from 2019. Yes, I'm loving Picard, too! He was my favourite Star Trek captain and this looks to be as interesting as Next Generations. Apparently, most of the actors from there will be making guest appearances.

    1. Picard is great! I haven't seen the Unicorn- but I hope to. Coroner makes sure to mention Toronto which is great. It's on Mondays at 9 I think

  11. I haven't watched Perfect Harmony, but it's positioned well, and it could survive. I hope they bring Coroner to us like they did Burden of Truth (over the summer). A few Canadian shows make it through.

I guess my three would be Evil, Emergence, and The Morning Show (via Apple TV).

    1. I hope you get to see it one day. I haven't seen your 3. Evil just seems too negative to me

  12. Count me out this time. By choice, I do not even have television (dis)service! I haven't had TV nor cable (dis)service for 6 or 7 years, and I won't have it ever again.

    You may call me "Red-Pilled".

  13. Don't watch much TV so unfamiliar with all these choices of yours. Sorry. Hope you are feeling well.

  14. Even though these are all TV series, I haven't seen a single one of them. I wish I got Coroner, because it sounds like something I would enjoy.

The only new series I've seen is FBI Most Wanted, but my foodie friend Sally RAVES over Evil. Somehow it doesn't sound good to me. I saw the previews and they turned me off.

I don't watch comedies because of the laugh tracks. I don't want to be told when to laugh.

    1. No laugh track on Perfect Harmony which is great. It was a tough week for me. I hope you can see Coroner because it is good
