Weekly Song Challenge

Well, I should be in the hospital recuperating now and...maybe....I can look at my blog. I hope so and i hope I have good pain killers:). The week Jingle, Jangle, Jungle has chosen 3 good themes and here they are:

A SONG ABOUT A CHEATER OR CHEATING

A SONG WITH KISS IN THE TITLE

A SONG WITH FATHER OR DAD IN THE TITLE

1. WHY DON'T YOU DO RIGHT SUNG BY JULIE LONDON-1961

I remember Julie London from the TV show "Emergency" and had no clue about her great musical history and what a vixen she was. She exudes sexy allure without it being slutty unlike Marilyn Monroe, for example. I think this guy is cheating her out of money by gambling and that is a form of cheating in my book. This song was written in 1936 by "Kansas Joe" McCoy and Herb Morand.

2. KISS SUNG BY MARILYN MONROE-1953

Oh Marilyn and your shenanigans! This is from the campy, but great, film "Niagara" filmed right at Niagara Falls where Marilyn plays a bad girl married to an unstable Joseph Cotton but getting her kicks with some other chap. She and her paramour decide to off her hapless husband under the noses of a newlywed couple who can't seem to get away from these 2 nuts. To drive her husband crazy, Marilyn saunters into this fun group and starts singing "Kiss". It does drive men wild:) This song was written for the movie by Haven Gillespie and Lionel Newman.

3. MY HEART BELONGS TO DADDY SUNG BY EARTHA KITT-1953

This song was written by Col Porter back in 1938 and made famous by Mary Martin (Larry Hagman's mom) as she does a little strip tease. This has nothing to do with sweet dad or father but everything to do with a sugar daddy like we see in many Hollywood marriages(um..Dick Van Dyke, Tony Randall). I immediately thought of Eartha Kitt who is brilliant at singing these types of songs without it making it sound cheap and lurid. I love it.

So which 3 would you choose?

  1. Hi, Birgit!

I hope you got some sleep and that the pain meds are taking effect by now and helping you through these early post-surgery hours. Best wishes for a speedy and full recovery, dear friend. Please keep us posted and let us know how you are doing.

I like your picks for the song challenge. Yessum, I watched Emergency and liked Julie London. When I was little, my mom bought her records and I played them on my tiny tinny turntable in the basement. Therefore I was already quite familiar with her as a singer by the time she became known as an actress.

"Get out the fire hose!" - it's Marilyn Monroe! I enjoyed that scene from Niagara. I had to laugh to myself when MM handed the record to the DJ and asked if he'd play it. He looked at the platter and said "Kiss?" I was expecting to hear "Detroit Rock City." Notice when the record starts to play and you see a closeup of MM how she has her lips parted? (She basically stands there mouth breathing.) As I'm sure you know, glamour photographers often asked their models to part their lips in that manner to make them appear more alluring and sexually adventurous. That was certainly a stretch for Miss Monroe.

My mother also bought Eartha Kitt records, and so I knew her as a sultry songstress before she played Catwoman on Batman. I well remember the song "My Heart Belongs To Daddy." Now you've got me thinking that I could become a sugar daddy, but poor ones aren't in demand. For my venture to be a success, I'm gonna need $$$. That's where you come in, BB. Please follow the Patreon link I will provide at the end of my comment.

    Here are my picks:

CHEATER OR CHEATING SONG: "Cheating" by The Animals, the B side of the Burdon Brit band's May 1966 single "Don't Bring Me Down." Both sides were played often on the jukebox at the Shady Dell and are on my list of the 200 Greatest Dell Hits.

KISS SONG: "Kiss Away," a top 30 hit for country pop singer Ronnie Dove in late 1965. The song was also waxed by Tammy Wynette, Jane Morgan, David Houston and Brenda Lee.

DAD OR FATHER SONG: "Ole Father Time," originally recorded by U.S. R&B singer Millie Foster, an artist who sounded a lot like Tina Turner. Her single was released in at the start of January, 1964, and was immediately covered in England by UK pop songstress Helen Shapiro.

Thinking about you, dear friend BB. Get some rest and be thankful that the pesky procedure is behind you. If you are running a post tamale then I'll meet you in the balcony-- "At The Movies!"

  2. I sure hope your surgery went well. Take care.

As to the songs my brain got stuck in Europe after I thought of "Your Cheatin' Heart" and I got "Besame Mucho" (Kiss me Much) and "Oh Mein Papa". Maybe it was your foreign TV show theme still stuck in my head.

  4. Julie London is one of my favorites and I believe she'd be considered a "classy dame." Marilyn Monroe might not have been a "classy dame," but the more I know about her the more respect I have for her. And Eartha Kitt was not just unique, she was uniquely unique.

Hope all is well and you're back on your feet soon.

  5. Best wishes for an easy recovery and plentiful pain meds. My choices: 1. Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town was written by Mel Tillis and made popular by Kenny Rogers & The First Edition. 2. Kiss On My List was written by Darryl Hall and Janna Allan and made popular by Hall & Oates. 3. Don't Cry Daddy was written by Mac Davis and made popular by Elvis Presley.

    Take it easy, my dear.

    Love,
    Janie

  6. To be honest, I had never heard of any of those songs, dear. I hope you are home by the time you read this, and I hope you have lots of pain meds to get you through the worst part of your recovery. I'm glad the surgery went well, or they wouldn't be releasing you. Please take it easy, dear.

  7. Birgit,

You picked three excellent vintage picks. The only song title I recognized is "My Heart Belongs To Daddy" but this might be my first time to hear it. I enjoyed all three songs. I love the seductive singing style of these three gals! Thanks for sharing. I hope you're resting comfortably and the pain is manageable. Remember to get up to walk frequently. That will speed your recovery. ;) You're in my thoughts and prayers, dear friend. XOXO
