Wednesday Music Fest-So Romantic

My sweet hubby often will draw a sun for me and he says that I am his sunshine. You can either say…awwwww or bleccch. For me, I melt and this brings out the romantic in me. There are many pieces of music that makes me swoon but I chose these 3 because I find them so ….what’s the word?? Yes, romantic:) I'm joining in with the Monday Music Challenge.

1. SOMEWHERE IN TIME BY JOHN BARRY-1980

I must have been one of the few people who went to see this film in the theatre because I had a major crush on Christopher Reeve. I fell in love with this movie because of the fantasy of it and the music really moves this plot along. It just wouldn’t be the same without  this great theme.

2. THE KISS FROM LAST OF THE MOHICANS BY TREVOR JONES-1992

I saw this film in the theatre as well because, yes, I had a crush on Daniel-Day Lewis and he didn’t disappoint. This is a great soundtrack and should have been nominated for an Oscar but Trevor couldn’t finish the who project so Randy Edelman completed it. Since someone came n to fine tune it, it was disqualified. To me, this is an Oscar winner and just makes me feel all gooey inside.

3. HYMN FOR THE HEARTLAND BY JAMES GALWAY AND PHIL COULTER-1998

James Galway is a world renowned flutist who has established himself as one of the best in the world. With Phil, he created a CD, which I must get, which is all about the immigrant Irish who came to the States. It’s just so beautiful and dreamlike. I love it.

Which songs or musical pieces makes your heart go pitter patter?

  1. Hi, Birgit!

    Happy Song Day, dear friend!

I'm saying "awwwww" after reading about your sweet hubby calling you his sunshine and drawing you pictures. The picture Mrs. Shady paints of me has me turning to moonshine.

John Barry's given us so many memorable pieces, and "Somewhere In Time" is a great example. I get down in the dumps thinking about handsome, virile actor Chris Reeve having his life and career derailed just as he was reaching his prime. I highly recommend Noises Off.

I still have a crush on Maddie Stowe, and Mrs. Shady and I loved the Mohicans adaptation which we watched 30 years ago. Memorable moment: "You stay alive! If they don't kill you, they'll take you north up to the Huron lands. Submit, do you hear? You're strong! You survive! You stay alive, no matter what occurs! I will find you! No matter how long it takes, no matter how far. I will find you!"

This is my first time hearing "Hymn For The Heartland." More than just romantic, it is indeed enchanting, evocative and "dreamlike."

A song that in my opinion transcends romantic love and takes us to a higher plane is "Somewhere Out There" from the 1986 animated film An American Tail. I get all verklempt every time I hear it and especially when I watch the clip of Fievel singing it in the movie.

I hope you are feeling better this week. Have a wonderful Wednesday, dear friend BB. I'll be here tamale waiting for you, sitting in the balcony-- "At the Movies!"

    1. I like your pick from an animated movie. I am feeling a bit better but wish I could sleep right now. I know that music but not with kids singing it. I prefer grownups singing...:)
I'm glad you like the music I chose and that you like Mohicans. Stowe is under-rated as an actress I think. I'm also happy you like that Celtics tune. It just made me want to go to Ireland as soon as I heard it.

  2. I love both of those soundtracks!! I wouldn't say I have a large collection of film soundtracks (probably about a dozen to 15) but I do have those two. If I could only find the one for "October Sky"! It's one of my absolute faves but has been out of print for years. :-(

I also saw both films in the theatre, the audience for Somewhere in Time was respectable but not huge however Mohicans was a sell-out. Both are endlessly rewatchable, at least for me, and the scores are a big part of why though they both have many other virtues as well. They both benefit from something that can't be planned, combustible chemistry between their respective (beautiful) leads.

I am familiar with James Galway's marvelous recordings but this one is new to me. Lovely.

Putting my thinking cap on the first swoony romantic score that occurred to me is the one for Bette Davis's "Now, Voyager". It really sets the movie for that amazing film. Staying in that lane 1968's "The Thomas Crown Affair" has a gorgeous score featuring "The Windmills of My Mind" which always gets to me. Finally I'd say a hauntingly romantic song from a mediocre movie "The Shadow of Your Smile" from the Elizabeth Taylor/Richard Burton film "The Sandpiper".

    1. I'm so glad you are here and that you love my picks. I saw Noth in the theatre as well and fell in love with the first one. I miss Christopher Reeve. October Sky has a great soundtrack. Now, Voyager is a classic as are your other 2 although I have not seen the films

  4. Good for your husband. That will keep the romance alive. I haven't heard any of these songs and I guess this is one area I have no idea what to suggest.

BTW, WOYWW stands for What's On Your Workdesk, Wednesday. Thanks for asking. Sorry I should have mentioned because some others might not know, either.

    1. I hope you liked the music. Oh now I know! Oh my goodness, you can't see my desk at all! It's so messy I'm embarrassed because I've been working on this forever scrapbook on my mom's eggs she created. I want to give it to my brother

  6. BIRGIT ~

I also love that theme music from 'SOMEWHERE IN TIME'. Like you, I saw that movie in a theatre and later bought the DVD. At one time, this was one of my favorite movies. And I still like it and watch it. (My dental hygienist told me it's her favorite movie, and she was shocked to learn that a man [i.e., me] really likes and owns it. I guess it's generally thought of as a 'Chick Flick'.)

Unfortunately, however, the more I watched 'SOMEWHERE IN TIME' the more I began to notice different flaws. As the continuity flaws piled up to the point that I realized the movie's storyline (even as a Fantasy) was quite impossible and embarrassingly ridiculous, 'Somewhere In Time' lost a lot of the luster it had previously enjoyed in my mind.

As I said, I still like the movie - because I love, Love, LOVE the premise - but, boy, were there some boneheaded mistakes made in that script, and I'm surprised that no one on the production team questioned them. Or perhaps they did. Perhaps the makers of the film DID KNOW how flawed the storyline was but figured the audiences were too dim to notice.

  8. Your husband is very sweet. I think it's wonderful that he melts you like that. That's just adorable! John Barry's song is the only one I knew in your line up. I have yet to see The Last Mohicans. I love the Celtic flavor of the song. And, your last one is another movie I do not know but I did enjoy the beautiful flute music. :) I'm sorry for not visiting before now. Things get crazy sometimes. Have a boogietastic week, my dear!
