Wedding Songs Part Zwei

These 2 people are my Oma and Opa, my mom's parents, who were celebrating 60 yrs of marriage. Today, to be honest, I think she may have divorced Opa for good reason, but this was her only love. Opa, I had heard had dipped his stick  into other oil wells but Oma knew how to deal with him. Once, she literally dragged him from a Cafe by his big ears. I love my Oma who endured so much because she was just loveable in my eyes. Anyway, this was from 1982 when I brought them back from Europe to celebrate their anniversary in our land. My mom had given them a second wedding since they didn't really have a first as Oma had to wear black in her gown because she was pregnant with Tante Ilse. They married only a few weeks before Tante Ilse was born which was Dec. 27, 1922. I know they got married in December, but can't recall the date but, it was a 100 years ago. I couldn't find a pic of my wedding day so I thought why not Oma and Opa. I am showcasing 3 songs I had at my wedding. The first one was my first dance between my now ex and me and then the next 2 followed.

1. FOR MY LADY BY THE MOODY BLUES-1972

I loved this song from the moment I heard it. It was written and sung by my favourite, Ray Thomas, who, unfortunately, is no longer with us. I was lucky to see them in concert just before Ray had to retire due to illness.

2. WHITE WEDDING SUNG BY BILLY IDOL-1982

Oh yes, I had this as my second song and, yes, I know it's anti wedding, but that's why I chose it. Do you know that Billy Idol actually came to our university back in 1983..I think it was that year. These were my fun drinking years so it's a bit of a fog. I was dancing only a few feet from him. I'm not sure how we got him but glad we did and I danced to this and, of course, Mony Mony. I think that's how you spell it.

3. I DO, I DO, I DO, I DO, I DO SUNG BY ABBA- 1975

Yes, ABBA songs were at my wedding...more than once. I played Dancing Queen, SOS and shoot..there was another but it has slipped my mind. Oh well, I am writing this late.

I thought I would end June with more wedding stuff and chose songs from my nuptials. Even though the marriage didn't last, our friendship did and I'm glad that he is my friend.

  1. Hi, Birgit!

Thanks for posting that charming photo and telling us about your grandparents Oma and Opa. They are a great example of how couples of the past were able and willing to work through serious marital problems like infidelity and stay together long term.

I enjoyed your set of wedding songs. That was indeed quite a coup for your university to land Billy Idol as entertainment. That said, if the dance event took place in 1983, as you believe it did, then Billy was not yet a huge star, at least not here in the U.S. Examining the stats, his "White Wedding" went top 5 on the U.S. Rock chart, but barely cracked the top 40 on the pop chart. Billy's first single, "Dancing With Myself," today regarded as one of his classics, failed to reach any chart, didn't even make the Bubbling Under survey. His second single, the one you mentioned, "Mony Mony," merely Bubbled Under at #107. It wasn't until a live version of the song was released in 1987 that it became a chart-topping hit. His third release, "Hot In The City," revealed that Billy was catching on in the spring and summer of 1982 but, even so, that record missed the top 20 on the pop chart and missed the top 30 on the Rock chart. Even "Rebel Yell," a song some regard as Billy's greatest, the first single released from his album of the same name in late 1983, only made it halfway up the pop chart. My point is that Billy Idol didn't become a major glam rock icon and a household name until 1984. I remember the excitement when my university booked James Brown for a live show. I had already attended his live performance on the grandstand of the York Fair in the fall of 1968, and therefore I didn't attend his appearance at Penn State.

Yessum, ABBA's "I Do" song is ideal for weddings, as are many of their other hits. Thanks for sharing that you played them at yours.

FYI - If you intend to visit Shady's Place this week and read/listen to my current post, today is the last day you will be able to do so before it gets replaced and goes into the archives. As always, I thank you for your friendship and support, dear friend BB. Have a super day and I'll be back tamale waiting for you in the balcony-- "At The Movies!"
