Weekly Song Challenge

Another week and more music to enjoy. Jingle, Jangle, Jungle has a good time with music and she has another 3 themes this week and here they are...

A SONG WITH A BOY'S NAME IN THE TITLE

A SONG THAT MENTIONS A PLACE IN THE TITLE

A SONG THAT KENNY LOGGINS WROTE

1. FERNANDO BY ABBA-1975

Now, come on! You know I was going with ABBA because this is the first song that came into my head and I loved it from the moment I heard it. I was in some diner where we stopped on our way to visit my Aunt & Uncle in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I just fell in love with it right from the get go. I was only 11 but loved it.

2. BORN ON THE BAYOU BY CCR-1969

Yes, Contrary to what you might think, I  do love good rock N' roll and this is one I enjoy and was the first one to pop into my head this time. Creedence, Clearwater Revival or CCR is an excellent band that my mom-in-law liked.

3. I'M ALRIGHT BY KENNY LOGGINS-1980

This song was written by Kenny Loggins which, I think, put him on the big map because it was featured in the classic comedy "Caddyshack" that starred Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Ted Knight and Rodney Dangerfield. This poor gopher gets no respect but he still loves to dance to this tune. So did I when I used to go to a fire hazard basement disco for kids who were under age for drinks, but wanted to boogie down. The place was called "Charlie Chan's" and I had a blast there dancing, often, to this tune. Now just make sure you beware of O'Henry bars .

  1. Ode to Billie Joe by Bobbie Gentry; A Summer Place by Andy Williams. I'd have to Google to know what Kenny Loggins wrote, so I'll pass on that one.

  2. Hi, Birgit!

I am here to bust my brain with you on the Weekly Song Challenge, dear friend! You picked three of the songs that I was going to choose for this round. They are all faves by the respective artists.

Yessum, "Fernando" is a great song - evocative, passionate, soulful - a welcome change from the shallow disco ditties that were clogging the airwaves in the mid 70s. "Fernando" remains a fan favorite, recognized as one of the Swedish group's finest anthems.

At age 19, I ran out and bought the Creedence hit single "Proud Mary." I soon discovered that I was playing the fab flip, "Born On The Bayou," just as often. That pretty green and red Fantasy label 45 is a nice collectible, and it is also a genuine doublesider - two great songs for the price of one:

No fair! You stole another song I was going to suggest, the gopher goody "I'm Alright" from Caddyshack, one of the funniest films ever made. I think I'll rank it #3 after Mad,Mad World and Airplane! Sounds like your Charlie Chan's was a lot like my Shady Dell. I wish I could have seen your dive and you could have experienced mine. The Dell wasn't in a fire hazard basement. It was in a barn annex on a sloping hillside. When cops raided the place to nab underage drinkers and curfew violators, teenagers jumped out the windows to the embankment below and fled down the hill to the main road. I'll never forget the night a guy got his pants caught in a tree as he was shimmying down to escape the fuzz. He needed to leave his pants behind hanging on a branch. Good times!

    Here are my picks:

BOY NAME SONG: "The Oscar Mayer Wiener Jingle." I challenge you to play this song on a continuous loop throughout the day!

PLACE SONG: "(Down at) Papa Joe's" by The Dixiebelles, an American girl group that actually consisted of members of The Anita Kerr Singers. "Papa Joe's" peaked near the top 10 in the U.S. in late November and early December, 1963, the days and weeks immediately following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

KENNY LOGGINS PENNED SONG: "What A Fool Believes," written by Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins, a chart-topping hit in the spring of 1979 for The Doobie Brothers fronted by McDonald.

I hope you are in good spirits in spite of it all, dear friend BB. Please remember your bosom buddies on the other side of the screen (just inches away) are all rooting for you. Have a happy Wednesday and I'll see you tamale "At The Movies!"

  3. In the 80's, Loggins wrote a lot of songs for movies.
For place, I'll say Chevelle's So Long Mother Earth.

  4. These are great songs this week. I love how you included the little dancing gopher from Caddy Shack. Now I want to rewatch that film. Smile. Hope all is well with you and September has been a good month. Hugs-Erika

  5. Birgit,

You came up with some good picks for this week. Every time I hear "I'm Alright" I think of Caddyshack. That's such a fun movie. Bill Murray cracks me up but so does most of the comedians in the film. Take it easy, my dear. I know you're not feeling well and dealing with so much. Just know, you're in my thoughts and prayers. Sending hugs your way! 😘

  6. Love the first two. I'm an Abba and Credence fan. Good calls.

  7. "Fernando" was one of those songs where I knew the name and knew the song, but never put the two together. Thanks for straightening that out...

I love that scene from *Caddyshack* (by the way, it's a Baby Ruth, or "Baby Rut" as it has on the wrapper: same ingredients, but a different texture. Both made by the same company now, as it happens...) Kenny Loggins wrote the music for a ton of movies in the '80's and '90's, which should set him for life....

  8. Ah, Fernando - great pick, Birgit. It's pure and innocent, corny as heck. I've always loved ABBA.

    Cheers.

  9. Unlike your movie picks, I know all three of these songs. I've been told I was born a decade too late, because I love all the old 70s songs we now call "classic rock." You sure love your ABBA and Fernando is a great one, too. I had no idea Kenny Loggins wrote I'm Alright. Great picks, Birgit.

  10. Strangely, Fernando is one of the few Abba songs I don’t like,
