Thursday Movie Picks: Oscar Edition-Best Animated Film

Well, today I am off to the emergency because I am bleeding more than I should be according to my GP. My surgeon is off on holidays until the 16th so this visit is to just make sure everything is normal and not Abby-normal😁. It sucks but better to be safe than sorry.

Now, it is another Oscar round over at Wandering Through The Shelves  it is all about animated films. Snow White win a special Oscar back in 1937, well, one regular Oscar and 7 small ones, but animated films were not recognized until Beauty Adn The Beast when that film was up for Best Picture. This finally woke up the Oscar people to recognize the people who create animated films. Here are my 3...

1. SHREK-2001

I love this first animated feature the best because of the unique way all the fairy tales were brought to life. I laughed so hard at the evil way they dealt with the 3 bears. Poor Mama Bear is taken away by that Lord Farquaad only later to see her as a bear rug. I was shocked and laughed so hard..maybe I am evil. Anyway, all the magical creatures are to be taken away but the talking donkey escapes and ends up at the bad ogre’s place-Shrek which means “Terror” in German. Somehow, Shrek and donkey must fight a misunderstood dragon to save the beautiful princess in the tower. It is very funny and touching even. Worth looking up.

2. THE INCREDIBLES-2004

I have to see this one again since it’s been a long time since I saw it in the theatre. Basically, people with superpowers have given up fighting evil and have regular jobs because regular folk are not happy with them. Hubby works in some pencil pushing drab place and dreams of  fighting evil. He has super s5rength while his wife is very elastic. They have 2 kids with their own powers and all of them somehow end up at an evil man’s lair and mat fight him to save mankind. Something like that. It’s quite witty and I love the lady who makes their outfits which seems to be a cross between Coco Chanel, Anna Wintour and Edith Head which turns out to be my favourite character.

3. TOY STORY 3- 2010

I still have to see the latest Toy Story but this one is quite a good movie in this franchise. We now know all the characters since this is the 3 movie, but it is well written and a heartfelt one. Basically, the kid has grown up and is off to college. He decides to give his toys away but, at the last minute, decides against this but the box of toys are mistakenly taken away to a daycare centre. They meet other toys but soon realize it is run by an embittered teddy bear who has his own minions. Woody and the rest decide to escape but that is easier said than done. It’s quite a nice story and worth a look.

Which 3 films would you choose?

  1. Hi, Birgit!

I hope your examination at the ER reveals that your problem is nothing to worry about or easily fixable, dear friend. I'll be thinking about you again today and hoping for the best possible outcome.

I'm afraid I'm The Weakest Link when it comes to animated features. I've seen a few in my lifetime, but usually watched them undressed... uh,... I mean under duress... because Mrs. Shady forced me to.

For example, I watched Toy Story 1 with Mrs. Shady and our grandson., but I haven't seen any of the films in this post, nor can I recommend any. I do appreciate the talent of the animators and voice actors, and I'm happy to know they are receiving greater recognition and awards in recent decades.

Believe it or not, the internet has been down again this morning, on again and off again. I hope I can get this comment published before the screen freezes. If you feel up to it, stop over to my place in the coming days and let me know how you made out today. I'm keeping you in my prayers. Feel better soon, dear friend BB!

  2. Excellent choices. Shrek was the first one to win Best Animated Picture. (Ironic after Disney had been making them for decades.)
Definitely like the first two picks. I'd go with some standout animation - Rango and Kubo and the Two Strings. Great stories and fantastic animation. Oh, and add Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse to that list.

  5. Prayers for you. "Too much bleeding" is never a good thing.

It was made long before animated films were recognized by AMPAS, but I always thought Max Fleischer's "Gulliver's Travels" was pretty fantastic.

  6. I've seen all of your picks and they are good ones.

I'm not positive about the Oscar status of my picks, but I'll run with these:

Coco --colorful sweet and innovative. I tried not to like this one, but I couldn't help myself.

Spirited Away --beautifully rendered anime. I've got this DVD in my collection.

WALL E --I thought the story was innovative and prescient. Makes one think.

  7. Heard of them all.....seen none! I D-E-T-E-S-T-E-D the first Toy Story so the thought of sitting through any others gives me agita!

Even if I'm not a fan animation is a great art and it's ridiculous that it took decades before the Academy created a category for it. That said of the winners thus far the only one I really admired was Up so I'm sitting the week out.

  8. I hope all is well. We anxiously await updates.

I LOVE The Incredibles. If it's on TV and I happen to come across it, I'll watch it to the end. I enjoyed Shrek, but Toy Story 3 didn't touch me as much as it did the majority.

  9. Good choices. I keep the Toy Story movies and Monsters, Inc. on the DVR for the grandkids.
    Hope you are okay.

  10. Hello Birgit, I hope your trip to the hospital shows that there is nothing seriously wrong.
Not seen any of these movies I'm afraid, Kate x

  11. I hope by now you know if you are doing OK, or if there is something seriously wrong. I hope for the former.

I've seen Shrek and loved it. It was on TV, and I thought it was fabulous. I've never heard of The Incredibles, and have heard of Toy Story, but never saw it or any that followed. I want Puss-N-Boots to have his own story line (grin).

  13. BIRGIT ~

I have always loved animation. But the two animated movies that I love the most both came into being BEFORE there was an annual Academy Award 'Oscar' for that genre.

There *WAS* a Special Achievement Academy Award for the live action/animated hybrid 'WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT' in 1988, and that movie is amongst my all-time Top 25.

Another one on my all-time Top 25 list - which was also a combination of animation and live-action footage - is 'SONG OF THE SOUTH' (1946).

I sure hope the bleeding is under control now and you are on your way to full, successful recovery!
