Letter K

KEY LARGO-1948

A bunch of baddies come to a hotel during a hurricane and terrorize the crippled owner, his daughter and a drifter.

The final pairing of Bogie and Bacall and Bogie and Robinson (Edward G.) since Bogie and Robinson actually made 5 films together. The film also stars Claire Trevor, who won an Oscar for her performance, and Lionel Barrymore who suffered from severe rheumatoid arthritis at this time. When the actor gets up from his wheelchair and falls, I cringed knowing how much pain he must have been in and my heart went out to him as well.

An excellent film Noir with great actors, excellently directed by John Huston and filmed (Karl Freund).

  1. Ahh, but the strawberries that's... that's where I had them. They laughed at me and made jokes but I proved beyond the shadow of a doubt and with... geometric logic... that a duplicate key to the wardroom icebox DID exist, and I'd have produced that key if they hadn't of pulled the Caine out of action. I, I, I know now they were only trying to protect some fellow officers...

    Hi, Birgit!

Whenever I think of Bogie, I immediately recall his rambling speech from The Caine Mutiny and am inspired to share it. :)

I watched Key Largo in 2007 during my year long Film Noir binge. It's a fine film with a great cast. I didn't know that trivia about Barrymore suffering from severe R-A. Taking a fall in that condition was surely a very painful stunt.

Thank you for reminding me of one of my favorite films of the 40s, dear friend BB. Happy "K" day to you!

  2. Wow. It has been years and years since I saw that film. I love movies from the 40's. They just don't make them like that anymore.

  3. Birgit,

"Key Largo" is a good old classic. We saw this years ago. Every now and then we get in a vintage film mood. I wouldn't mind having a movie marathon of old flicks sometime soon.

    1. Cathy, unconnected, but I tried commenting on your post yesterday and Wordpress, which hates me as much as I hate it, wouldn’t let me sign in via Twitter. Not sure why.

  5. Wonderful film that I've seen a few times. It's one of those films I'd watch again if I saw that it was coming on.

  6. BIRGIT ~
I put 'KEY LARGO' at #6 on my list of 'Top 12 Favorite Film Noir'.

In truth, it would have come in at #7 had I included 'CASABLANCA' on my list. But since so many people argue that 'CASABLANCA' is NOT "Film Noir", I deliberately left it off just so I could include an extra movie in my Top 12. But, BTW, everyone who says 'CASABLANCA' is not an example of Film Noir is 100% wrong, and I can prove it. But I'm willing to let people be wrong sometimes if it benefits me and my movie lists. ;^)

'KEY LARGO' was a great song by Bertie Higgins, too!! (It almost makes me cry.)

  9. I don't think I've seen it. I remember my uncle watching it though. Ugg to that much pain, sucks indeed.

  10. Aww Man, I just wrote a comment and I hit something and poof it disappeared. So let's try this again. Love old movies & I'll have to watch this one ASAP! Love Boggie & all.. I know what you mean about the rheumatoid arthritis. I have Spinal Stenosis & arthritis in my hips. Total bummer! Anyway beautiful day today & I'm about to walk my pup! I'm doing AtoZ too! I think it's tons of fun! Have a great day!

  12. Okay, this has to go on my list. And I will know that the pain in that scene is real!

  13. Don't think I ever saw this one although I am very familiar with it's existence. Some very good actors in it.
