FARGO-1996

A loser husband has his rich wife kidnaped by 2 deadly but dumbass jerks, one who talks way too much and the other rarely talks. They end up in Fargo where a very pregnant cop is hot on their trail.

It won 2 Oscars for Screenplay and best actress for Frances McDormand( who won this year too) and should have won more but that is typical isn’t it? It also stars the great William H. Macy and Steve Buscemi who shines as the too talkative co-kidnapper. There was hardly any snow so they had to do a lot of filming in North Dakota and Canada and they still had to make snow.

  1. Hi, Birgit!

Fargo is one of my favorite films, and the television series is also brilliant if you haven't yet seen it. Frances McDormand is fabulous as the preggers Brainerd, Minnesota, police chief. William H. Macy gives an incredible performance as jittery Jerry Lundegaard. Mrs. S and I are currently enjoying him on ER. Steve Buscemi is hilarious and pathetic as the gabby kidnapper. I also loved him in Ghost World. Peter Stormare is awesome in the role of the deadpan, cold blooded killer - slash - kidnapper. Stormare also shined in the TV series Prison Break.

I didn't know they had a challenge finding enough snow to film Fargo. That's quite an interesting piece of trivia!

Have a great weekend, dear friend BB!

  2. A great movie indeed. The TV series is done really well too. Funny how they had to make snow. That would be a pain in the arse.

  3. WOO HOO!!! I have not only seen this movie (on TV, of course), but also have seen the series. It was a fabulous movie, and I am thrilled that you picked it. I'm loving this month of movie greats, and even more so because I have actually SEEN two of these movies you have chosen so far (which says a LOT for me)!! Keep these greats coming and keep the tidbits of info coming, too, please, dear Birgit.

  5. Fargo is my absolute favorite movie. I am not sure what that says about me. ha ha ha. I do love the police chief character and the actor who plays her is amazing. I find it amazing how they make the viewer feel all warm and cozy watching her waddle around and listening to her lovely accent while at the same time pushing a body through a wood chipper. Definitely was worth an Oscar and should have won.

  7. I own it on VHS -- a special edition videotape with a "snow globe" featuring a foot sticking out of a wood-chipper -- but haven't watched it in years. Excellent film. My first exposure to both William H. Macy, Frances McDormand, AND Steve Buscemi, and I immediately became a fan of all three!

    1. Uhhh, I misused the word "both" in my comment. Just pretend you don't see it, okay?

  10. It's been a while since I've seen Fargo, but I did like it. Haven't seen the TV show though. A friend just yesterday was telling me I should watch it, but I just don't like getting caught up in ongoing series like that.

  14. This is an unforgettable movie. I liked everything about it -- the story, the performances, the presentation. I suppose we don't see McDormand a lot more because of the lack of good stories she's offered.

  15. I remember this one. I saw it on TV, though, not in the theater. Interesting film.

  16. Sorry for no comments but I was gone for the weekend. I'm glad most of you have seen this film and liked the film. For the ones who have not seen it...maybe, one day, you will. I haven't seen the TV show though and not sure I will.

  17. Birgit,

We watched this movie but it was a bit odd to me. I may have to go back to see it again. Perhaps it was just my mind set. We saw Frances McDormand in western North Carolina on set of the movie "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri". I even snapped a few photos. :)
